Son Yeon-jae makes her case for the Olympics

More surprises came later during the individual hoop finals as the 17-year-old marked fifth place with 27.975 points among eight gymnasts. Although this series was a Category-B tournament in which several top-ranked gymnasts did not participate, experts said that Son showed hopeful signs that she has the talent to compete on the Olympic stage .
To secure her path to the Olympics next year, Son has to finish inside the top-15 at the 31st Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships in Montpellier, France, which starts Sept. 19.
But since the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG), the governing body of gymnastics, allows only two gymnasts from one country to advance to the Summer Games, experts predict Son can capture her ticket to London if she can make it into the top-18 at the World Championships.
“Yeon-jae is growing faster than expected,” Cha Sang-eun, former chief of the strengthening committee of the Korean Gymnastic Association, said to Ilgan Sports, the JoongAng Ilbo’s daily sports newspaper, yesterday. “I think her performance level suggests she doesn’t need to worry whether or not she will go to the Olympics.”
While some fans criticize that Son has gained her popularity with her “pretty face,” Son has been preparing hard after making her senior debut last year. She had a quite impressive performance last year, taking a bronze medal at the 2010 Asian Games. But to aim for a bigger stage, Son went to the training center in Novogorsk, Russia, to train with top-class Russian gymnasts. She also went to Croatia this summer to build her stamina and skills, while featuring in six FIG World Cup series to gain some experience.
Son could be the sixth Korean rhythmic gymnast in history to compete at the Olympics. Korea’s best finish came in 2008, when Shin Soo-ji finished in 12th place. Rhythmic gymnastics has been a sport traditionally dominated by Eastern Europeans, but Son is ready to mark her name at the Olympics
“The points that I earned in this competition is not that important,” Son said Wednesday. “What’s important is my goal, not the short-time performance.”

손연재(17·세종고)가 강해졌다. 생애 첫 개인종합(109.500) 톱10에 들었다. 종목별 결선에 오른 후프는 개인 최고 점수(27.975)로 5위에 올랐다.
7일(한국시간) 우즈베키스탄 타슈켄트에서 국제체조연맹(FIG) 월드컵 시리즈를 끝낸 손연재의 성적표다. 취약 종목이었던 곤봉도 결선에 올라 6위(27.375)를 차지했다.
올해 초 그의 목표는 단 하나. 2012년 런던 올림픽 출전이었다. 목표를 이루기 위해 ‘전 종목 26점대 안착’이라는 세부 실행 계획을 세웠다. 올 들어 5개 월드컵 시리즈를 치른 지금 손연재는 목표를 초과 달성했다. 타슈켄트 대회에서 전 종목 27점대(후프 27.450점, 볼 27.075점, 리본 27.525점, 곤봉 27.450점)에 올랐다. 남은 대회는 19일 프랑스 몽펠리에에서 열리는 세계선수권. 여기서 개인종합 18위 안에 들면 런던 올림픽에 직행한다. 지금의 상승세라면 올림픽 출전은 손에 잡힐 듯하다. 신수지가 세운 2008년 베이징 올림픽 12위의 기록을 뛰어넘을지도 모른다.
손연재의 빠른 성장엔 이유가 있다. 손연재는 이번 여름 혼자 크로아티아에 갔다. 부모도, 에이전트도 동행하지 않았다. 거기서 러시아 대표팀과 함께 훈련했다. 러시아 대표팀엔 리듬체조의 ‘여제’ 예브게니야 카나예바와 ‘2인자’ 다리야 콘다코바 등 현역 최고 선수들이 있다. 눈이 높아지면 목표도 커지게 마련. 세계 최고들의 연기를 매일 가까이에서 보며 손연재도 피나는 노력을 했다. 강도 높은 훈련을 소화하며 손연재는 체력도, 정신력도 강해졌다. 타슈켄트 대회에서 허리 통증에 시달렸지만 모두 이겨냈다.
국제대회에 꾸준히 얼굴을 비친 것도 성적을 끌어올리는 데 한몫했다. 리듬체조는 러시아나 동유럽의 텃세가 강한 종목이다. 세계 톱 선수들이나 심판들은 대부분 이 지역 출신이다. 심판들은 눈에 익지 않은 선수, 특히 아시아권 선수들에게 점수가 박하다. 제 실력을 인정받기 어렵다는 뜻이다. 손연재는 끊임없이 월드컵 시리즈에 출전하며 눈도장을 찍어왔다. 손연재의 점수가 꾸준히 상승 곡선을 그려온 것은 손연재의 실력이 늘었기 때문이기도 하지만 얼굴이 알려지며 ‘제 점수’를 받기 시작했기 때문이기도 하다.
대한체조협회도 함께 노력했다. 지난 6월 FIG 리듬체조 기술위원장 마리아 시즈코프스카를 초청해 손연재 등 국가대표 선수들을 소개하고 그의 지도를 받도록 했다. 시즈코프스카는 몽펠리에 세계선수권대회와 2012년 런던 올림픽 심판위원장으로 내정됐다. 시즈코프스카는 당시 손연재를 두고 “어메이징”을 연발했다. 그는 “손연재의 연기는 음악과 하나가 되는 느낌이다. 표현력이 좋고 미소도 자연스럽다. 최근 예술성이 강조되는 리듬체조의 흐름에도 부합한다”고 칭찬했다.
손연재가 소위 ‘뜬’ 것은 예쁜 얼굴 때문이었다. 늘 실력 논란이 따랐다. ‘피겨 여왕’ 김연아와 비교되기도 했다. 그러나 이제는 다 지나간 일이다. 누구도 손연재의 실력을 의심할 수 없다.
차상은 전 대한체조협회 강화위원장은 “올림픽 출전을 걱정할 단계는 지났다. 이제 (개인종합) 한 자릿수 등수에 도전할 차례다. 우리 환경에서 이런 선수가 나온 것은 정말 대단한 일이다”라고 말했다. 이제부터 손연재가 걸어가는 길이 한국 리듬체조의 길이다.
