Two jump into DP mayoral primary

Two more Democrats joined the party’s mayoral primary, but the biggest opposition party was still left without a high-profile candidate for Seoul’s Oct. 26 mayoral by-election.

Park Young-sun, the Democratic Party’s chief policy maker, and Shin Geh-ryoon, a former three-term lawmaker and former deputy mayor of Seoul, held separate press conferences yesterday to announce their candidacies.

The two join Chun Jung-bae, a member of the DP’s Supreme Council, who declared his bid earlier.

The victor of the Democratic Party’s primary, scheduled for Sept. 25, will go on to face the nominees of other, minor liberal parties - including activist Park Won-soon - in early October in an effort to unify the left against the ruling Grand National Party.

The DP will select its nominee through a public opinion poll (counting for 50 percent) and a vote by the DP’s Seoul chapter to be held at Jamsil Stadium (counting for 50 percent).

Earlier this month, the DP, the Democratic Labor Party, the People’s Participation Party and the liberal civic organizations agreed to field a single candidate in the hopes of capturing City Hall.

Park yesterday pledged wider welfare programs for Seoul, including lower tuition and better education. She said Seoulites wanted a mayor who could bring change and reform, promising her efforts to improve the city.

Shin, meanwhile, stressed his neutrality in factional politics.

“I belong to no faction,” Shin said. “I am just a humble, liberal politician.”

Shin added that the upcoming election must not be a factional battle and that the victory could only be achieved by a candidate with the ability to unite traditional liberals and young voters.

Sources in the DP said yesterday that Representative Choo Mi-ae was also considering joining the race. If Choo registers with the DP’s primary committee, the party would have four primary candidates.

민주당 ‘안방 리그’ 흥행 불붙나

서울시장 4파전 … 25일 경선서 박원순과 맞불을 후보 선출

민주당 서울시장 후보 경선이 4파전으로 치러지게 됐다. 이미 출마 의사를 밝힌 천정배 최고위원, 신계륜 전 의원에 이어 박영선 정책위의장, 추미애 의원이 15일 레이스에 뛰어들었다. 박 의장은 기자회견을 열어 “젊은이들이 꿈과 희망을 갖고 행복하고 즐겁게 살 수 있도록 활기 넘치는 서울을 만들겠다”며 “시장의 권한으로 할 수 있는 서울시립대학의 등록금부터 반값으로 내리겠다”고 말했다.

　당초 박 의장은 출마를 주저했으나 민주당 경선 후보 등록 마감일 하루 전인 14일 저녁 17대 국회에서 의정 활동을 함께했던 우상호·이목희 전 의원 등 8명이 여의도의 중식당으로 박 의장을 불러내 설득하는 바람에 마음을 바꾸게 됐다고 한다. 우 전 의원은 “당 경선의 흥행 실패가 우려되는 상황에서 박 의장이 박원순 변호사에게 맞설 유일한 대안이라고 설득했다”며 “박 의장이 부담감을 드러내며 눈물까지 보였지만 결국 출마를 결심했다”고 전했다.

　손학규 대표를 비롯한 당 주류 측의 설득도 집요했다. 손 대표와 가까운 이인영 최고위원과 박선숙 전략홍보본부장 및 박지원 전 원내대표 등도 그를 만나 출마를 권유했다. 결국 박 의장은 15일 당 고위정책회의에서 “당을 생각해 촛불이 되라면 촛불이 되고, 낙엽이 되라면 낙엽이 될 것”이라며 출마 의사를 밝혔다.

　추미애 의원도 손 대표의 권유로 출마를 결심했다. 손 대표는 14일 밤 추 의원을 만나 “당이 위기인데, 경선에 참여해 당을 살려 달라”고 부탁했고, 추 의원은 결국 후보 등록을 마쳤다. 추 의원은 “국민은 정치도 바꾸고 서울시도 바꾸라고 한다”며 “변화 열망을 담는 새로운 그릇이 되겠다”고 말했다.

천 최고위원도 이날 기자회견에서 “이명박 정권의 폭정에 맞서 맨 앞에서, 가장 치열하게 싸웠다”며 “위대한 민주개혁 진보진영의 승리로 기대에 보답하겠다”고 말했다. 신 전 의원은 “지도력 결핍과 위기에 빠진 민주당을 위해 한 톨의 밀알이 되는 심정으로 서울시장 후보에 출마한다”고 밝혔다.

　‘안철수 바람’을 타고 지지율이 급상승한 박원순 변호사와의 격차가 워낙 커 ‘마이너리그’로까지 불리던 민주당 경선은 박 의장과 추 의원 등이 참여하면서 최악의 상황은 피하게 됐다. 이들은 25일 잠실 실내체육관에서 경선(당원 현장투표 50%, 여론조사 50%)을 치른다. 여기서 당선된 후보는 다음 달 초 민주노동당 후보 및 박원순 변호사와 ‘야권 단일 후보’ 타이틀을 놓고 ‘결승전’을 벌인다.
