Reflections on local art in pastoral settings

This October - one of the most pleasant months of the year in Korea - the JoongAng Ilbo and the Korean Art Museum Association have selected eight private art museums for readers to visit as they plan seasonal outings to get out of the house and see something new. Unlike commercial galleries that yield profits though art sales, these museums survive mostly on government subsidies and entrance fees. Starting with the opening of Total Museum, Korea’s first private museum, in 1984, they have played a crucial role in making art more accessible to the Korean public.
Whanki Museum
The Whanki Museum was initially built to exhibit and study the works of Kim Hwan-gi, a pioneer of abstract art in the country. It currently has around 2,000 of the artist’s works. Located in Buam-dong, northern Seoul, an area known for its leisurely, almost rural, atmosphere, the museum boasts a scenic backdrop at the ridge of Inwang Mountain. In its vicinity lies Changui Gate, one of the four main gates of the capital, as well as the Sanmotoonge Cafe, where scenes from the popular TV drama “Coffee Prince” were shot.

Total Museum
Total Museum is Korea’s first private art museum. Besides featuring contemporary art from Korea and around the world, it also includes a multicultural exhibit area where it shows works from a diverse range of genres. The museum is located near other places of interest, including the Kim Chong Yung Museum, novelist Park Jong-hwa’s former residence and the Yeongin Literature Center. Starting from this week, the museum is holding a drawing exhibit entitled “The News after The News.” This comprises walls featuring sketches by artist Dan Perjovschi, who used topical news from Korea as inspiration. Born in Romania, Perjovschi gained international recognition during the Venice Bienniale in 1999. Later, he held solo exhibitions at the Tate Modern in London in 2006 and at MoMa in New York in 2007. After the exhibition ends on Dec. 4, the drawings will be painted over.

Youngeun Museum of Contemporary Art
The Youngeun Museum of Contemporary Art was founded in 2000 by the Daeyu Cultural Foundation. This museum hosts artists-in-residence programs along with exhibiting and conducting research on contemporary artworks. Nearby, there are a handful of other museums to see including the Gyeonggi Ceramic Museum, Manhae Museum, Museum FACE, the Museum of Sexual Slavery by Japanese Military and the Museum of Traditional Arts and Crafts.

Batangol Art Center
This museum overlooking the Namhan River contains a main exhibition hall, an interactive art space and a concert hall. The interactive art space hosts programs such as a couple T-shirt making class. Sites to look out for nearby include Lake Cheonji, the Jungmi Mountain Observatory, Yongmun Mountain tourist complex and Namyangju Film Studios.

Cyan Museum
Located in Yeongcheon, North Gyeongsang, this 6,000-pyeong (5-acre) museum was built using an abandoned school. In 2005, it was chosen as one of the most beautiful museums in the country by the Korean Travel Writers’ Association.
This year, Gasang Village participated in the government-run village art project, in which various art works were set up there. Nearby sites include the Bohyeon Mountain Astronomy Museum and Unju Mountain Horse Riding Track.
Until Monday, the village will hold a Korean medicine festival as well as an art and culture festival.

The museum received a national architecture prize upon its opening. Situated near a hiking trail inside Mudeung Mountain Park, the museum, which includes a cafe, is also a resting area for visitors.
Behind the museum building is a green tea field as well as Jeungsim Temple. This year, to mark its 10th anniversary, the museum is holding a traditional Korean ink painting exhibition.

산을 업고, 강을 품고 … 자연에 녹아들어 그림이 된 미술관들
하늘은 높고 바람은 청아하다. 어디론가 떠나고 싶은 계절이다. 서울 시내에, 수도권에, 그리고 전국 곳곳에 숨은 사립미술관을 소개한다. 국내 첫 사립미술관인 서울 평창동 토탈미술관, 서울의 옛 정취가 남아 있는 부암동 환기미술관, 폐교 리모델링의 선례로 꼽힌 경북 영천 시안미술관 등. 작품 판매로 수익을 내는 상업화랑과 달리 사립미술관은 일부 정부 지원금 외엔 별다른 수입이 없다. 많지 않은 입장료에 의존해 개인 및 기관이 애정을 갖고 꾸려나가는 공간이다. 한국사립미술관협회(회장 이명옥)와 함께 나들이 가기 좋은 미술관을 간추렸다.

환기미술관
근대기 대표적 서양화가 수화(樹話) 김환기(1913∼74)의 작품을 전시·연구하기 위해 1992년 설립됐다. 김환기의 작품을 2000여 점 소장하고 있다. ‘서울 도심 속에서 만나볼 수 있는 시골’로 이름난 부암동에 자리잡았다. 청와대 뒤편 부암동은 서울의 중심에 있으면서도 개발제한으로 옛 서울의 정취가 남아 있는 곳이다. 주변엔 서울 4소문 중 하나인 창의문(彰義門)이 있고, 서울 외곽산성이 인왕산 능선을 타고 형성돼 있다. 몇 년 전 인기드라마 ‘커피프린스’의 주 촬영지였던 ‘산모퉁이 카페’도 있다. 미술관에서 이 카페에 이르는 20여 분가량의 산책로는 도시인의 사랑을 받는 코스다.

토탈미술관
우리나라 최초의 사립미술관이다. 국내외 현대미술 전시뿐 아니라 다양한 장르의 예술문화를 소개하는 복합문화공간으로 자리잡았다. 가까이에 가나아트센터, 김종영미술관, 박종화 고택, 영인문학관 등 많은 문화 명소가 있다. 29일부터 댄 퍼잡스키(50) 드로잉전 ‘The News after The News’가 열린다. 루마니아 출신의 이 작가는 1999년 베니스 비엔날레에서 주목받은 뒤 2006년 런던 테이트 모던, 2007년 뉴욕 현대미술관(MoMA)에서 대규모 전시를 열었다. 미술관 벽면에 몇 날 며칠을 고생하며 그려넣은 그림과 이야기들은 12월 4일 전시가 끝나면 페인트칠과 함께 사라진다. 이번 전시를 위해 댄 퍼잡스키는 지난 몇 달 동안 전시 진행 측이 보내준 한국 사회의 다양한 뉴스를 접했고, 이를 전시장 벽면에 옮길 참이다.

북한강변에 자리잡은 가평 가일미술관은 서울 근교 드라이브 코스로 적당하다. 두물머리, 가평 영양잣마을, 국립 유명산 자연휴양림, 꽃무지 풀무지 수목원, 녹수계곡, 명지계곡, 대금산, 수덕산, 아침고요수목원, 자연과 별 천문대, 청평 자연휴양림, 청평호반, 현등사 등 주변 관광지와 연계해 다녀올 만하다. 매월 셋째 토요일마다 미술관에서 음악회가 열리는데 10월 공연은 재즈가수 이미배의 ‘가을을 노래하다’, 15일 오후 7시다.

경기도 광주시 자연림 속에 자리잡은 영은미술관은 1992년 설립된 대유문화재단에서 2000년 개관했다. 동시대 현대미술 작품을 연구·소장·전시하는 현대미술관이자 국내외 작가를 지원하는 창작 스튜디오다. 인근엔 경기도자박물관, 만해기념관, 얼굴 박물관, 일본군 위안부 역사관, 풀짚공예박물관 등이 있다.

바탕골미술관
남한강이 내려다보이는 부지에 12년 전 자리잡았다. 미술관 측은 “강바람이 마중나오는 미술관”이라고 소개한다. 전시장뿐 아니라 공연장과 미술 체험공간을 갖췄다. 주말엔 가족을 위한 공연·미술체험 프로그램(성인 3000원), 연인이 전시와 공연을 보고 함께 커플 티셔츠를 만드는 프로그램(식사 포함 2만2000원)을 마련했다. 주변엔 천진암 성지, 중미산 천문대, 용문산 관광단지, 연꽃밭인 양수리 세미원, 남양주 영화촬영소 등이 있다.

시안미술관
경북 영천 시안미술관은 6000평 부지 위의 현대미술관이다. 2005년 한국여행작가협회로부터 ‘폐교를 활용한 가장 아름다운 미술관’에 선정되기도 했다. 미술관이 있는 가상리 마을은 ‘2011 마을 미술프로젝트’에 참여해 곳곳에 다양한 작품을 설치했다. 마을 전체가 ‘지붕 없는 미술관’인 셈이다. 주변엔 보현산 천문 과학관, 운주산 승마 체험장 등이 있다. 9월 30일∼10월 3일에는 영천 한약장수축제와 골벌 문화예술제도 열린다.

한국 남종화의 전통을 지켜온 의재(毅齋) 허백련(1891~1977) 선생의 화맥을 기리기 위해 설립된 곳이다. 개관한 해인 2001년 대한민국 건축대상을 받았다. 무등산 공원 내 등산로 길목에 있어 미술관 밑 카페 ‘문향전’은 등산객 쉼터 역할도 하고 있다. 미술관 뒤엔 증심사와 무등산 춘설 녹차밭이 있다. 미술관은 개관 10주년을 맞아 수묵화 특별 기획전을 연달아 열고 있다. 서구화 물결 속에 설 자리를 잃어가는 수묵화의 아름다움을 알리는 데 그간 미술관이 헌신했고, 앞으로도 그럴 거라는 선언이다.

전남 담양에 지난해 개관했다. 국제전 및 지역작가 후원전을 열고 있다. 개관전으로 에콰도로, 파나마 등 남미 작가 3인전을, 이어 아프리카 미술제를 열었다. 두 전시 모두 먼 나라 미술뿐 아니라 그곳 전통 음악공연을 곁들여 지역민들과의 축제 성격을 띠었다. 올해는 전남 지역 작가전에 이어 담양을 대표하는 무형문화재(참빗·채상장·소목장) 3인전을 열고 있다.
주변엔 16만㎡ 대숲인 죽녹원과 관방제림(官防堤林)이 있다. 죽녹원은 2003년 개원해 죽림욕을 즐길 수 있는 산책로 등이 조성돼 있다. 연간 400만 명이 이곳을 찾는다.
관방제림은 군에서 관리하는 숲으로 200∼300여년 된 노거목이 서 있다. 푸조나무 111그루, 팽나무 18그루, 개서어나무 1그루 등이 학술자원 가치를 인정받아 천연기념물 제366호로 지정됐다.
