Red carpet rolls out for this year’s Busan fest

BUSAN - Asia’s largest film festival rolls out the red carpet at its stunning new $140 million home yesterday, hoping a parade of stars will usher in a new era for cinema in the region.

“Today is a day of great meaning and significance,” said Korean director Song Il-gon, whose romance “Always” was chosen to open the 16th edition of the Busan International Film Festival. “Busan has long played an important role in Korean cinema and in Asian cinema and it now has a building of significance that reflects that role. This is a landmark for cinema.”

Scaffolding was coming down at the new Busan Film Center, a complex covering 30,000 square meters (323,000 square feet) and including a 4,000-seat outdoor theater, just hours before the stars were due to arrive.

Around 150 faithful film fans had camped out overnight in an effort to ensure prime star-gazing positions for the big event and they were to be joined by more than 4,000 official guests for the evening festivities.

Among those gracing the red carpet were Korean idols Song Hye-kyo and Ahn Sung-ki, alongside Taiwanese heartthrob Takeshi Kaneshiro and China’s Tang Wei, here to promote the Peter Chan-directed blockbuster “Wu Xia.”

International A-listers included veteran French actress Isabelle Huppert, French director Luc Besson and Malaysia’s Michelle Yeoh, star of Besson’s latest film, “The Lady,” on the life of Myanmar activist Aung San Suu Kyi.

Chinese director-producer Tsui Hark is also in town to collect the Asian Filmmaker of the Year Award for a career spanning three decades that has included credits on the likes of the gangster classic “A Better Tomorrow” and the ground-breaking fantasy “Zu Warriors.”

Festival director Lee Yong-kwan said he was happy that Korea and the world could see what his team had been working on for the past three years. “Our new center is a place for films and a place for people,” he said. “We are confident it will serve more than the festival but become the home of cinema in Asia.”

BIFF has lined up 307 films to be screened over nine days, with 135 either world or international premieres, meaning they are screening outside their home nations for the first time.

The Busan festival’s major award, New Currents, offers two $30,000 prizes for first- or second-time Asian filmmakers and has attracted a final field of 13 productions, representing 11 countries.

2011 BIFF, 스타 커플들이 뜬다

제16회 부산국제영화제에서 스타 커플들의 활약이 두드러지고 있다.

남녀·남남·여여 등 다채로운 커플 메이킹으로 영화제에 대한 팬들의 관심을 더욱 윤택하게 하고 있다.

6일 개막식에서는 '소주 커플'과 '투지원 커플'이 가장 눈에 띄었다. 소주 커플은 소지섭과 한효주의 조합이다. 영화 '오직 그대만'에 남녀 주인공으로 호흡을 맞췄다. 이번 영화제 개막작으로 선정되면서 개막식의 하이라이트 커플이 됐다. 레드카펫에서 둘 다 올 블랙 패션으로 찰떡같은 하모니를 보여줬다.

투지원 커플은 개막식 MC를 맡은 엄지원과 예지원을 말한다. 영화제 개막 사회자로선 처음으로 여여 커플을 이뤄 행사를 이끌었다. 둘 다 완숙한 드레스 패션과 노련한 진행으로 합격점을 얻었다.

7~8일 이틀 동안에는 송혜교-비 커플이 바통을 이어받는다. 7일에는 정지훈(비)이 입대에 앞서 마지막으로 '비상: 태양가까이'의 제작보고회에 참여했고, 8일에는 송혜교가 '오늘'의 갈라 프리젠테이션 기자회견과 시사회에 참석한다. 각자 다른 작품으로 부산을 찾았지만 공통점이 있다. 두 사람은 2004년에 인기리에 방영됐던 드라마 '풀하우스'의 콤비다.

남남 커플도 있다. 장동건과 일본 배우 오다기리 조는 8일 부산 해운대구 CGV부산 센텀시티에서 전쟁 블록버스터 '마이 웨이'의 제작보고회를 연다. 세계 2차대전을 배경으로 조선과 일본의 청년이 역사의 소용돌이 속에서 점차 서로에게 희망이 되어가는 과정을 그리고 있어서 '장-오다기리' 커플의 완급조절이 키 포인트다. 두 사람은 개막식에서 판빙빙과 함께 나란히 등장해 팬들의 큰 환호를 받았다.

신세대 한류스타 장근석도 남남 커플을 이룬다. 미국 할리우드의 신성 로건 레먼과 함께 9일 오픈토크를 진행한다. 특별한 인연은 없으나 장근석이 출연한 '너는 펫'과 로건 레먼이 나온 외화 '삼총사 3D'가 모두 롯데엔터테인먼트 작품이라는 점이 작용했다.

국내팬들에게 친숙한 중국배우 탕웨이와 진청우(금성무)도 9일 커플 호흡을 선보인다. 진가신 감독의 '무협'의 주인공으로 참석해 이날 해운대 비프(BIFF) 빌리지 야외무대에서 오픈토크를 진행한다.

부산국제영화제 커플 열전은 뤽 베송 감독과 양자경 등 폐막일인 14일까지 계속된다.
