골드러쉬

예나 지금이나 황금은 권력과 부귀(富貴)를 상징한다. 고대 이집트인들에게 황금은 태양신의 분신이었다. 파라오 투탕카멘의 관은 110㎏짜리 순금으로 제작됐고, 미라 얼굴에는 황금 마스크를 씌웠다. 황금으로 장식함으로써 파라오가 신과 동격임을 알린 것이다. 중국인의 황금 사랑은 정평이 나 있다. 청(淸) 왕조 건륭제는 밥그릇도 황금으로 만들어 썼다고 한다. “중국인의 최대 종교는 황금”이란 말까지 있다.

우리에게 황금의 위력은 한동안 잊혀졌다. 불과 몇 해 전만 해도 한 돈(3.75g)에 5만~6만원 하던 돌반지를 선물하는 게 인사치레였다. 요즘 금 한 돈에 20만원을 훌쩍 넘는다. 국제 금값도 사상 최고치를 연일 갈아치우는 중이다. 한국은행이 13년 만에 처음으로 금 25t을 사들였지만 금 보유량은 세계 45위에 그친다. 금 부족 국가라는 얘기다. 우리나라에 방치된 금광은 1800여 개를 헤아린다고 한다. 금값 고공행진이 계속된다면 한국판 골드 러시라도 추진해야 하는 건 아닐까.

Korea is short of gold considering the size of ⓔø economy. Reportedly, there are over 1,800 abandoned gold mines in Korea. If the gold price continues to soar, we may have to prepare another gold rush in Korea.
