Kim Han-sol gets marks for style at school in Bosnia

MOSTAR, Bosnia - The grandson of one of the world’s most notorious dictators is having fun with three or four schoolmates in a dorm room at an international school in Bosnia and Herzegovina, conversing and laughing out loud - until he and his friends realize a Korean reporter is lurking outside the windows.

One of his new friends steps out of the dorm room and tells the JoongAng Ilbo reporter outside, “This is an area of privacy.” He returns to the room, closes the door, and soon the lights in the room go out.

As reporters found this week, North Korean leader Kim Jong-il’s 16-year-old grandson, Kim Han-sol, seems to be adjusting well to his new life at the United World College in Mostar (UWCiM), in the large city in southern Bosnia and Herzegovina. The school year commenced Sept. 1, but Kim’s visa wasn’t issued until recently and he arrived in Mostar on Thursday. His black suitcase was still propped outside his dorm room.

According to a local broadcast in Bosnia-Herzegovina Thursday, Kim arrived in a black t-shirt, with moussed hair, black horn-rimmed glasses and an earring in his left ear. There was little to distinguish the brightly smiling teen from the other 120-some students, except that he appeared a bit more stylish.

Kim said in the broadcast that he was happy to be in Mostar and that he has taken a liking to it. He called it beautiful.

Fellow students said Kim was pretty “ordinary,” and that he was fairly proficient in English.

UWCiM headmistress Valentina Mindoljevic emphasized that she will treat Kim like any other student. Other students were warned by the principal not to give media interviews about Kim. She also revealed that there will be a press conference on Friday, local time, but there was no guarantee Kim would appear.

Kim is the son of Switzerland-educated Kim Jong-nam, Kim Jong-il’s eldest son and heir-apparent until he fell out of grace with his father and was replaced by his younger half-brother Kim Jong-un as successor. Kim Han-sol is the son of Kim Jong-nam’s second wife and has been living in Macau.

Earlier this month, Kim was revealed to have accounts on Facebook and Twitter and a blog. Kim was originally supposed to enroll in the Li Po Chun United World College in Hong Kong but ran into visa problems.

United World Colleges is a British-based foundation comprised of 13 schools located in different countries.

김한솔, 기숙사 식당 갈 때도 사설 경호원과 동행

김한솔(16)군이 유학 중인 보스니아헤르체고비나에서 한국 언론에 처음으로 모습을 드러냈다. 김군은 김정일 북한 국방위원장의 장손이자 큰아들 정남의 맏아들이다. 14일 낮 12시45분쯤(현지시간) 김군은 한국 기자들이 있다는 것을 알면서도 기숙사 현관 밖으로 나와 아래층의 식당으로 향했다. 그는 그 직전까지 “한국 기자들은 대면하고 싶지 않다”는 뜻을 기숙사 직원을 통해 밝혔었다.

　김군은 12일 보스니아 남부 지역에 있는 모스타르시에서 유학생활을 시작했다. 전 세계 13개 도시에 있는 국제학교인 유나이티드월드칼리지의 모스타르분교(UWCiM)에서 인터내셔널 바칼로레아(IB) 과정에 등록했다.

중앙선데이 2010년 6월 6일자.2명의 사설경비업체 직원의 호위를 받으며 식당을 오간 그는 취재진의 한국어와 영어가 뒤섞인 질문에 아무런 대꾸를 하지 않았다. 입을 굳게 다물고 빠른 걸음으로 계단을 오르내렸다. 간간이 가벼운 미소를 짓기도 했다. 회색 면바지에 비슷한 색깔의 티셔츠로 멋을 낸 차림이었으며 손에는 점퍼를 들고 있었다. 왼쪽 귀에 두 개의 귀고리를 했으며, 왼손 중지에 반지를 끼고 있었다. 티셔츠 위쪽으로 은색 목걸이가 보였다. 검은색 뿔테 안경 아래의 얼굴에는 여드름이 군데군데 나 있었다. 그는 이날 늦잠을 잤다. 기숙사의 동급생들은 그가 전날 새로 만난 친구들과 늦게까지 대화를 나눴다고 전했다. 그는 전체 5층의 기숙사 4층에서 2인실을 사용하고 있다.

　기숙사에는 3명의 사설경비업체 직원이 배치돼 외부인의 출입을 막았다. 학교 측에서 요청한 것이었다. 기숙사 앞에서 만난 한 학생은 “한솔은 우리와 같은 평범한 학생으로 보였다. 영어를 상당히 잘 구사하고, 시원시원한 성격인 것 같다”고 그에 대한 첫인상을 소개했다.

　김군이 잠시 모습을 드러낸 시각, 약 1㎞ 떨어져 있는 학교에서는 기자회견이 열리고 있었다. 학교 대변인은 “김한솔에 대한 국제적 관심이 부담스러운 상황”이라고 말했다. 그에 따르면 김군의 학비는 1년에 1만2500유로(약 2000만원)다.

　한편 본지 자매지인 중앙SUNDAY는 지난해 6월 4일 마카오에서 김군을 만났다. 당시 연국(聯國)국제학교에 다니던 김군은 취재진을 보고도 당황하지 않고 영국식 영어로 질문에 답했다. “인터뷰할 수 있느냐”는 기자의 질문에 그는 “노코멘트. 프라이버시를 지켜 주세요”라고 말했다.
