There seems to be some who still believe that North Korea’s Kim Jong-il regime will not follow in the tragic footsteps of Qaddafi because the regime has decisive differences in maintaining status quo:/ 북한의 김정일 체제는 현재의 상황을 유지하는데 결정적인 차이가 있기 때문에 비극적인 카다피의 뒤를 따르지 않을 것이라고 믿는 사람들이 있는 것 같다/ the G-2 ally China, which does not want its neighbor - and a blood-tied ally - to collapse abruptly;/ 혈맹관계에 있는 이웃국가가 갑작스럽게 붕괴하는 것을 원치 않는 G2의 위치에 있는 동맹국 중국이 있고/ the “U.S. puppet regime” South Korea and American imperialism, both of which continue to fuel a sense of animosity among North Koreans and stave off any potential rupture within the ruling class./ 북한 인민 사이에 지속적으로 적대감을 고취시킬 수 있고 지배계층의 모든 잠재적인 분열을 늦추기 위해 이용할 수 있는 “미제 앞잡이” 한국과 미제국주의가 있기 때문이다/
But that is a skin-deep analysis of what’s going on inside the reclusive regime./ 그러나 그것은 은둔 체제의 내부에서 일어나고 있는 일들을 피상적으로 분석한 것에 지나지 않는다/ North Koreans have been suffering from decades of starvation, which goes beyond our imagination./ 북한 주민은 우리의 상상을 초월할 정도로 수십 년 동안 가난으로 고통을 받아 왔다/ Due to the devastating malnutrition, a large number of North Koreans have been getting shorter and weaker./ 치명적인 영양실조로 많은 북한 주민의 키가 작아지고 있으며 더욱 약해지고 있다/ About 150,000 political prisoners in concentration camps across the nation have received subhuman treatment for decades./ 북한 전역에 있는 수용소에는 약 15만 명의 정치범들이 수용되어 몇 십 년 동안 인간이하의 대우를 받고 있다/ Under the circumstances, the Kim Jong-il regime must keep in mind that such a repressive system cannot serve as a tool for propping up any regime, no matter how many nuclear warheads it has./ 그러한 상황에서 김정일 정권은 얼마나 많은 핵탄두를 가지고 있는 것과 상관없이 그러한 억압 체제가 정권을 지탱하기 위한 도구로 기능하지 못할 것이라는 것을 명심해야 한다/
The year 2012 is the first year of the “strong and prosperous nation” that Pyongyang has been promising its people./ 2012년은 평양정권이 북한 주민에게 약속해온 “강성 대국”의 원년이다/ But the leadership knows better./ 그러나 북한 지도부는 실상이 어떤지 잘 알고 있다/ They cannot even feed kids, and an ever-growing number of North Koreans flee their impoverished motherland in search of food and freedom on leaky wooden boats or via the long Chinese border, risking their lives./ 어린아이들이 굶고 있고 점점 더 많은 북한 주민들이 식량과 자유를 찾아 물이 새는 목선을 타거나 긴 중국의 국경선을 통해 목숨을 무릅쓰고 가난한 모국을 탈출하고 있다/ Against this backdrop, it sounds empty to beat a drum for a “prosperous country.”/ 이러한 상황에서 “강성대국”을 위한 북을 쳐봤자 공허하게만 들릴 뿐이다/
Fortunately, North Korea and the United States resume dialogue today./ 다행히 북한과 미국이 오늘 대화를 재개한다/ We urge Pyongyang to demonstrate a genuine willingness to scrap its nuclear dream so that the international community can voluntarily provide various kinds of aid./ 우리는 평양 당국이 핵무기의 꿈을 버리기 위한 진실한 자발성을 보여서 국제사회가 다양한 종류의 원조를 자발적으로 제공할 수 있기를 촉구한다/ Only then can Kim avert Qaddafi’s ultimately inevitable fate./ 그래야만 김정일이 궁극적으로 카다피의 불행한 운명을 피할 수 있을 것이다/
