Jobs available for only a third of law school grads

February 2012 will see the first graduating class of the country’s new three-year graduate law school system, but now there are estimates that only 500 of some 1,500 law school graduates will be able to find employment because of an oversaturation in the market.

내년 2월에 3년제 로스쿨 1기 졸업생들이 배출되는데 인력시장이 이미 포화상태라서 졸업생 1천5백명 가운데 5백명 가량만 취직할 수 있을 것이라는 전망이 나온다.
In response, the country’s first law school job fair was held yesterday, attracting 800 anxious students to Seoul World Cup Stadium in Seoul's Mapo District.

이 우려를 반영하듯 불안해하는 로스쿨 졸업 예정자 800여명이 어제 서울 마포구 상암동 월드컵경기장에서 열린 첫 로스쿨 취업박람회에 참석했다.
“Large law firms hold recruitment process seminars for law schools in Seoul, but in the countryside, we have no source of information,” said Lee Seul, 28, a third-year law student from Chonnam National University in Gwangju. “Because of my frustrations, I came up to Seoul.” Out of Chonnam’s 102 graduating law students, only one has secured a job at a law firm so far.

광주 소재 전남대학교 로스쿨 3학년 이슬(28)씨는 “대형 로펌들이 서울에서 로스쿨 졸업생들을 위한 채용설명회를 했다는데, 지방에서는 전혀 그런 정보를 얻을 수 없다. 좌절감 때문에 서울로 올라왔다.”고 말했다. 전남대 로스쿨 졸업 예정자 102명 가운데 현재까지 오직 1명만 로펌에 취직했다.
The fair was announced on Sunday by Representative Lee Jeong-hyeon, member of the National Assembly’s Legislation and Judiciary Committee, who said that the Korea Corporate Legal Affairs Association and the In-House Counsel Forum would sponsor the event for law school students who are seeking job opportunities.

취업박람회 개최 계획은 국회 법제사법위원회 소속 한나라당 이정현 의원이 일요일에 발표했다. 이 의원은 한국기업법무협회와 사내변호사협회가 구직하는 로스쿨 학생들을 위해 취업박람회를 후원할 것이라고 말했다.
Lee, who came to Seoul by bus the previous day, is a graduate of Ewha Womans University’s social welfare department and has been an active volunteer for the disabled since high school. She chose law school to promote legislation for the underprivileged and selected Chonnam because it specialized in public and human rights law.

전날 버스로 서울에 온 이슬씨는 이화여대 사회복지학과를 졸업했고 고교시절부터 장애인을 위한 자원봉사를 적극적으로 해오고 있다. 그녀는 사회 취약계층을 위한 입법활동을 하고 싶어 로스쿨로 진학했고 공공과 인권 관련 법을 특화한 전남대를 선택했다.
But like Lee, law students outside Seoul face discrimination in finding employment. Law students in Seoul have internship opportunities available in their first and second years, an experience which can segue into a job offer.

그러나 이씨 처럼 서울이 아닌 지역의 로스쿨 학생들은 취업에 차별을 받고 있다. 서울의 로스쿨 학생들은 1학년과 2학년에 취직으로 이어질 수 있는 인턴쉽 기회를 얻을 수 있다.
