힙합 스타•게이•장애인 … 인텔과 IBM은 왜 이들을 모셔갔는가
대중음악에 관한 한 고교생 아들과 제법 취향이 맞는 편이다. 아이도 나도 힙합을 좋아한다. 들으면 절로 몸이 들썩, 비트가 강렬한 데다 가사 괜찮은 곡이 꽤 많다. 물론 격한 표현 때문에 눈살 찌푸려질 때가 없지 않다. 그렇더라도 지금 우리 사는 세상에 대한 솔직한 묘사, 강렬한 메시지는 종종 공감을 부른다. 힙합은 태생부터 마이너리티의 문화 아니던가. 1980년대 미국 뉴욕의 할렘이 진원지다. 흑인•히스패닉 청년들의 슬픔과 분노를 먹고 자랐다. 30여 년이 지난 지금, 어느덧 세계 대중문화의 주류가 된 힙합 뮤지션 중엔 진보•평화주의자를 자처하는 이가 많다. 보다 나은 세상을 향한 열망은 힙합의 DNA다.하여튼 세계적 힙합 뮤지션 중 사회 참여와 그 영향력에 있어 첫손 꼽을 만한 이가 윌 아이 엠(Will. I. am•37)이다. 그래미상 6회 수상에 빛나는 그룹 ‘블랙 아이드 피스’의 리더이자 명(名)프로듀서다. 2008년 미국 대선 때 버락 오바마 후보를 지지하는 노래 ‘예스 위 캔’을 발표해 큰 반향을 일으켰다. 2010년 아이티 대지진 구호에도 앞장섰다. 뛰어난 창의력을 인정받아 종종 세계적 지식 콘퍼런스의 연사로 나선다.
그런 그가 이달 초 우리나라를 다녀갔다. 소규모 공연을 했지만 주목적은 따로 있었다. 세계 최대 반도체기업 인텔의 초경량 PC 프로젝트용 음원 개발을 위해서였다. 세계 12개 도시에서 받은 영감을 바탕으로 곡을 만들고, 프로젝트의 문화적 개념 구축에 힘을 보탠단다. 일회성 협업이 아니다. 그는 인텔의 어엿한 임원이다. 지난해 1월 혁신 담당 이사로 영입됐다. 인텔이 그에게 원하는 건 영감과 아이디어다. 애플•구글의 등장과 함께 업종 간 경계가 희미해진 지금, IT 기업에 진정 필요한 경쟁력은 새 시장과 생태계를 창안할 수 있는 대담한 상상력이기 때문이다.
초록은 동색끼리 모여 이런 혁신이 가능할 리 없다. 세계적 기업들이 인적 다양성 확보와 외부 네트워크 구축에 고심하는 이유다. 국내 기업들도 통섭이니, 인문경영이니 하는 용어를 앞세워 변화를 모색 중이다. 솔직히 그저 제스처로 보이는 게 더 많다. 천편일률적 공채, 여전한 학력•장애인 차별. 몇 달 전 한국IBM이 내건 신입사원 채용 공고를 보곤 무릎을 쳤다. 게이•레즈비언 같은 성 소수자에게 가산점을 준다고 했다. IBM엔 해외 법인마다 다양성 프로그램 담당자가 있다. 소수자 차별 방지는 물론 다양한 시각과 취향, 문화적 배경을 가진 이들의 잠재력을 최대한 끌어내기 위해서다. ‘100년 글로벌 기업’의 저력이 느껴진다.
윌 아이 엠의 인텔 입사 소식을 전한 국내 모 신문의 기사 제목은 이랬다. ‘고졸 힙합 가수 이사로 특채’. 비단 그 신문만의 시각일까. 스스로를 편견과 통념의 감옥에 가둔 기업에 혁신은 없다.
