Winning archers get healthy bonus from sponsor Hyundai

Hyundai Motor Group handed 1.6 billion won ($1.4 million) to Korea’s Olympic archery team yesterday in recognition of their rousing performance at the London Games.

Korean archers won three gold and one bronze medal at the 2012 Summer Games. They seized the women’s team title and followed this up with individual titles from Ki Bo-bae and Oh Jin-hyek.

At a welcoming ceremony held at Seoul’s Intercontinental Hotel, the nation’s leading carmaker and the Korea Archery Federation invited the archers’ families and another 400 guests, including Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Choe Kwang-shik and Korean Olympic Committee Chairman Park Yong-sung, to celebrate their achievements.

The group has been supporting Korean archery for nearly 30 years since its chairman, Chung Mong-koo, was first appointed as the chief of the local archery association in 1985.

Since 2005, his son Chung Eui-sun, who is also vice president of Hyundai Motor Group, has taken charge of the association.
