한 달에 하모니카 한 개가 망가졌다면 입술은 어떻게 되었을까

비포 더 레인(Before the Rain), 샌프란시스코 베이(San Francisco Bay). 리 오스카의 하모니카를 좋아하고 종종 듣는다. 그러나 조지 거슈윈의 랩소디 인 블루(Rhapsody in Blue)를 하모니카로 듣는 건 처음이었다. 클라리넷 음색에 뒤지지 않는 도입부부터 피날레에 이르기까지 대단히 인상적이었다. 지난 금요일(4일) 저녁 예술의전당에서 열린 신년음악회. 국내 최고 하모니시스트로 평가받는 전제덕(38)은 오케스트라 지휘자(최희준)의 손에 이끌려 두 번이나 무대에 다시 나와 뜨거운 박수갈채를 받았다.

　올해 신년음악회의 주제는 ‘희망찬 국민, 더 큰 대한민국’이었다. 대통령과 주한 외교사절, 각계 인사들이 함께한 자리의 말석에 끼었다. 관(官)이 주도한 행사라지만 새해를 국악•가곡과 클래식음악•발레 감상으로 시작한 것은 어떤 의미에서든 바람직한 모습이다. 특히 전제덕을 초대한 데는 유명세 외에 시각장애인이라는 점도 작용하지 않았나 싶다.

　태어나 보름 만에 시력을 잃은 전제덕은 세상에 대한 울분으로 폭발 직전이던 소수자 청년이었다. 1996년 라디오에서 우연히 전설적인 하모니카 연주자 투츠 틸레만스의 연주를 접했다. 가슴이 복받쳐 울기도 많이 울었다. 스승도 없이 오로지 귀에만 의지해 하모니카를 독학했다. 천 번도 넘게 들어 CD가 망가지기도 했다. 한 달에 하모니카 하나를 못 쓰게 만들 정도로 연습했다니, 당시 그의 입술은 어떠했겠는가.

　앞으로 더 많은 전제덕이 등장해 울분을 예술로, 절망을 희망으로 바꾸면 좋겠다. 사람들의 가슴을 따뜻하고 벅차게 만들었으면 한다. 문화관광연구원이 3일 내놓은 ‘2012 문화향수 실태조사’ 결과에서 희미하나마 실마리가 보인다. 가구별 월 수입에 따라 구분할 때 문화예술 관람률이 대부분 2010년보다 처졌지만, 최하층인 월 100만원 미만 가구는 2.3%포인트 상승(26.9%)했다. 바람직한 신호다. 문화바우처 등 저소득•소외계층 대상의 문화복지 사업이 효과를 보기 시작한 것이다.

　이번 조사에서 유아동기•청소년기에 문화예술을 경험한 사람은 그러지 않은 사람에 비해 예술행사 관람률•관람 의향이 높은 것으로 확인됐다. 저소득•소외계층 아이들에게 국가가 특히 더 신경을 써야 하는 이유다. 연 5만원의 작은 돈이 주어지는 문화바우처 사업의 혜택을 본 전주시 초등학교 6학년생의 소감을 소개한다.
“오늘 ‘라이어 2’(연극)를 봤다. 재미없을 것 같았는데 한번 보고 나니까 너무 재밌고 사람들이 좋아할 것 같다고 생각했다. 내가 보지도 못하고 재미없을 줄 알았다는 생각이 완전 생각한 것하고 달랐다. 이번 공연을 보고 나도 언젠가 저렇게 사람들에게 기쁨을 줄 수 있을까라고 번뜩 생각이 났다.”
