President Park Geun-hye poses in the cockpit of a Korea-built helicopter on May 22 while attending a ceremony at the Army Aviation School in Nonsan, South Chungcheong, to mark the first operational deployment of five locally built Surion transport utility choppers. The Korean Army said yesterday 20 Surion helicopters will be built and deployed by the end of this year. It was the first time a president attended an operational deployment ceremony of the military since 1987. She also inspected major research projects at the Agency for Defense Development, founded by her father, Park Chung Hee, and issued another message to North Korea to stop making threats. The visit was intended to check the nation’s readiness against security threats and to explore how defense science and technology can be included in her campaign to develop a “creative economy” for Korea. 박근혜 대통령이 22일 충청남도 논산의 육군항공학교에서 열린 기념식에 참석해 국산 헬기 수리온의 조종석에서 앉아 보았다. 이날 국내에서 제작된 수송용 헬기 수리온 다섯 대가 실전 배치됐다. 육군은 올해 말까지 수리온 20대를 제작해 실전에 배치하겠다고 말했다. 1987년 이래 대통령이 군의 무기 실전배치 기념식에 참석하기는 이번이 처음이다. 박 대통령은 아버지 박정희 전대통령이 설립한 국방과학연구소(ADD)의 주요 연구 프로젝트를 살펴보고 북한은 위협을 중단하라는 메시지를 발표했다. 대통령의 이번 방문은 안보위협 대비 태세를 점검하고 본인이 추진하는 창조 경제 개발에 국방과학과 기술을 어떻게 포함시킬지 탐구하려는 목적으로 추진됐다.
