친절은 갑을 관계도 부드럽게 한다
친절은 힘이 셉니다. 친절이 인생을, 사회를 바꾼 이야기는 참 많습니다. 대부분 ‘을의 친절’입니다. 제 기억 속엔 10여 년 전 서울은행 석수지점 청원경찰이었던 한원태씨가 있습니다. 은행원도 아닌 청원경찰이 지점 예금 500억원 중 300억원을 유치해 ‘300억원의 사나이’로 불렸습니다. 당시 이 은행엔 창구보다 청원경찰 책상 앞에 고객이 더 몰렸다고 합니다. 그의 ‘웃음’과 ‘친절’이 그만큼 내공 깊었다는 얘깁니다. 애초 그는 친절하지 않았답니다. 중졸에 뚱뚱한 몸매, 되레 짜증을 많이 내는 편이었다지요. 눈을 부라리고 신경질을 내니 인상은 자꾸 더러워져 갔답니다. 그러던 어느 날, 엄마 손을 잡고 온 어린아이가 그를 쳐다보고 울음을 터뜨렸답니다. ‘무뚝뚝•불친절, 그것이 누군가에겐 공포이기도 하구나’. 그는 반성했습니다. 그날부터 매일 100번씩 거울 앞에서 웃는 연습을 했답니다. 고객의 말을 일일이 20년간 기록했고, 은행 상품 공부도 열심히 했습니다. ‘안녕하세요. 뭘 도와드릴까요. 불편한 건 없으셔요’. 이 말이 건성이 아니라 진심이 될 때까지 되뇌었답니다. 그는 고객들의 성원으로 중졸의 핸디캡을 딛고 마침내 정식직원이 됩니다.(『한원태 이야기』)‘한원태 스토리’는 지난해 기업은행 보일러공 이철희씨에게도 이어졌습니다. 역시 중졸, 운전기사였던 이씨는 지난해 쉰셋에 은행 부지점장이 됐습니다. 비결은 마찬가지, 친절이었습니다. 깍듯한 인사, 화를 내는 고객에게도 웃음, 문자 하나를 보내도 진심을 담고, 고객 마음이 열릴 때까지 두드렸답니다. 500억원을 유치해 예금왕이 된 건 그 결과였을 뿐입니다.
우리는 이런 친절의 힘을 잘 압니다. 하지만 우리는 친절에 인색하고, 가끔 두려워합니다. 을이 되기 싫어서일까요. 미국에선 마트•쇼핑몰에서 앞사람이 문을 잡아주는 풍경을 흔히 볼 수 있습니다. 뒷사람은 꼭 ‘생큐’란 인사말을 빼놓지 않습니다. 미국의 친절 문화를 얘기할 때 나오는 단골메뉴입니다. 우리는 어떤가요. 문을 잡아주긴커녕 남이 연 문을 먼저 빠져나가기 바쁩니다. 열에 한 사람 “고맙다” 하는 이 찾기 어렵습니다. 괜한 친절 베풀다 을 되기 십상입니다. 그러니 미국 사람들도 한국에 오면 문 안 잡아준다는 얘기가 나옵니다. 근묵자흑(近墨者黑)인 셈이지요. 한술 더 떠 지갑 찾아주면 “돈은 어디 갔어”, 휴대전화 찾아주면 “여기 흠집은 왜 냈어” 따지는 이도 있습니다. 을 되기 싫어 친절을 포기할 판입니다.
갑을 논란이 올해 우리 사회를 달구고 있습니다. 이럴 때 친절 운동은 어떨까요. 이번엔 ‘갑의 친절’입니다. 갑은 무조건 을에게 친절하라는 겁니다. 존댓말 하기, 미소 짓기, 화내지 않기…. 조금은 갑을 갈등을 줄이는 데 도움이 되지 않을까요.

ⓒ kindness → the kindness 특정한 친절함을 뜻하므로 the 첨가
ⓓ the service provider → a service provider 특정한 사람을 지칭하는 것이 아니므로 부정관사 a 사용
ⓔ credited for → credited with credited for, credited with 모두 가능한 표현이나 for를 쓰는 경우는 ‘famous for’에서처럼 ‘명성’을 얻는 뉘앙스가 강함
