Daniel Chae appeals drug sentence

Daniel Chae, the singer who was sentenced last week to a year in prison plus probation and a 7 million won ($6,588) fine for facilitating the sale of marijuana, appealed the decision yesterday.

An appeals court will announce a date for his new trial within 14 days.

Chae, who admitted to all the charges against him in the previous trial, is reportedly arguing that the original sentence is too tough.

But when the court passed the sentence, it said that its judgment was the lightest punishment it was allowed to give. It also noted that Chae had done a good job in answering all questions posed to him by the court.

Chae was also accused of smoking marijuana, although in the beginning he denied such charges. He was found to have smoked the illegal drug after his hair was tested.
