STX Offshore & Shipping to build patrol ships for Peru

STX Offshore and Shipbuilding said yesterday it signed a 75 billion won deal ($71 million) to manufacture five patrol ships for the Defense Ministry of Peru.

The shipbuilder will deliver the ships by the end of 2015. The five 500-ton inshore patrol boats will have a length of 54.5 meters (178 feet) and a width of 8.5 meters, with speeds of 22 knots.

The company hopes to secure an order for additional five ships after Peru told Korea during a Defense Ministry meeting that it wants to have more patrol ships. Last March, the shipbuilding company sealed its first deal to build two navy patrol ships with Colombia’s Defense Ministry.
