Hyundai Heavy Industries said yesterday it has successfully installed a 5.5-megawatt offshore wind power generator, the largest in Korea, at Gimnyeong’s wind power complex on Jeju Island.
The world’s largest shipbuilder said its offshore wind turbine has a height of 100 meters, or 328 feet, with blades reaching 70 meters. It is designed to be resistant to salt corrosion and equipped with a crane inside the tower to facilitate repairs and maintenance.
The company said one 5.5-megawatt generator will be able to supply enough electricity for 1,100 households.
HHI said operation will begin next month and it will acquire international certification.
The company will offer tours to its wind power plant following the Wind Energy Asia 2014 event in Jeju, which runs today through Friday.
