좀 참는 게 좋지 않았을까? … 올림픽이 열리는 중인데
파벌주의와 부조리 의혹을 받고 있는 대한빙상경기연맹을 사정한다는 데 찬성한다. 그래서 우리 유망주들이 더 이상 날개 꺾이는 일 없도록, 더 높이 더 멀리 날 수 있도록 돕는 조직으로 다시 태어나기를 바란다. 이런 논란이 이제야 불거진 건 좀 늦은 감도 있다.그러나 박근혜 대통령이 “안현수 선수 문제가 체육계 저변의 부조리와 구조적 난맥상에 의한 것은 아닌지”라고 발언하고, 이어 문화체육관광부가 빙상연맹에 대해 조사하겠다며 ‘회초리’를 들고 흔드는 모습을 보며 눈살이 확 찌푸려진 건 때가 때인지라 그랬다. 어쨌든 빙상연맹은 선수단을 이끌고 올림픽이라는 전쟁터에서 전투를 치르는 중이다. 전선에서 전투 중일 때 후방에서 할 일은 병사들을 지원하고, 그들의 무사귀환을 기도하는 것이다. 전투 중에 지휘관의 자격과 잘못을 들먹이며 응징하겠다고 벼르는 건 누구에게 이로운 일인가. 다른 나라가 그랬다면 우린 무뇌아(無腦兒)같은 짓을 한다며 비웃지 않았을까.
발단은 빙상연맹에 반기를 들고 러시아로 귀화한 안현수 선수가 메달을 따면서다. 한데 안 선수가 빙상계의 부조리 문제를 제기한 건 이미 귀화 당시부터 그랬다. 빙상계의 부조리 논란이 일어난 건 그보다 한참 더 전이었다. 왜 그때는 귀 닫고 눈감고 있었는지 안타깝다. 안쓰러운 건 우리 젊은 선수들이다. 4년이나 피땀 흘리며 준비한 올림픽에서 집중해야 할 순간, 어른답지 못한 어른들 때문에 맘고생 하면서도 신화를 써내는 어린 선수들의 모습에 숙연해지기까지 한다.
‘경기에서 넘어진 선수도 넘어뜨린 선수도 4년간 그 경기만을 바라보고 달려왔다. 누가 그들에게 욕할 자격이 있는가?’
한국의 열혈 네티즌들이 또 한 건 올렸다. 이번 올림픽 여자 쇼트트랙 500m 결승전에서 우리 박승희 선수 등 2명을 넘어지게 한 엘리스크리스티(영국) 선수의 페이스북을 찾아가 단체로 항의 글을 남기고 도를 넘는 욕설까지 퍼부었단다. 이에 산전수전 다 겪은 영국 BBC방송까지 화들짝 놀라 우려하는 보도를 했다. 낯모르는 개인을 대상으로 온라인상에서 떼로 몰려가 분풀이하고 욕설을 퍼붓는 게 일상화된 나라는 우리나라 정도일 거다. 이번 사고에 가장 상처를 받은 건 크리스티 선수이지 않았을까. 그녀는 위로를 받아야지 욕을 먹어선 안 된다.
이번 올림픽 동안 가장 아쉬웠던 건 기대 이하의 성적이 아니라 수준 이하인 우리의 민도(民度)가 국제적으로 들통 났다는 사실이다. 참을성•여유•예의•배려 등을 겨루는 경기가 올림픽 종목으로 만들어졌으면 좋겠다. 그러면 우리나라 사람들은 올림픽에서 금메달을 따기 위해서라도 경기방법을 익히게 될 텐데 말이다.
