Blaze at hospital kills 21 infirm seniors, injures 8

여객선 세월호 침몰 사고 이후 나라 전체가 사고에 대해 민감하게 반응하고 있는 가운데, 만성 환자를 돌보는 병원에서 화재가 발생해 최소 21명이 사망했고 8명이 부상을 입었다고 경찰이 말했다.
Police said the fire was probably started by one of the patients, an 81-year-old man with mental problems.

The blaze began at around 12:25 a.m. yesterday in a storage room on the second floor of a three-story annex of a long-term chronic care hospital in Jangseong County, South Jeolla, where many elderly patients with Alzheimer’s disease or other chronic diseases lived.

어제 새벽 0시25분쯤 전남 장성군 요양병원의 3층짜리 별관의 2층 다용도실에서 화재가 시작됐다. 요양병원에는 치매 또는 다른 만성 질병을 앓고 있는 노인환자들이 입원했다.
Six of the eight injured were in critical condition, police said. Police said all of the 21 dead, including an auxiliary nurse, were on the second floor, where a total of 34 patients and the nurse lived. All 44 people on the annex’s first floor were evacuated.

부상자 8명 가운데 6명은 위독한 상태라고 경찰은 말했다. 경찰은 간호조무사 1명을 포함한 사망자 21명 모두 2층에 있었다고 말했다. 2층에는 환자 34명과 간호조무사 1명이 거주했다. 별관 1층에 거주했던 44명은 모두 대피했다.
The fire was reported by a nurse in the main building at 12:27 a.m. The 119 rescue squad arrived at the scene in four minutes, officials said. They put out the blaze in around two minutes. The rescue workers said most of the victims died of smoke inhalation.

본관에 있던 간호사가 새벽 0시27분에 화재 신고를 했다. 119 구조대가 4분 후에 현장에 도착했다고 소방당국이 말했다. 그들은 2분만에 화재를 진압했다. 구조대원들은 희생자 대부분이 연기 흡입으로 사망했다고 말했다.
