Jo stars again in green plum parody ad

It seems like singer Jo Sung-mo will star in his signature TV commercial once again after 15 years. According to industry insiders yesterday, Jo and Woongjin Foods, the company that operates Green Plum drink, decided to feature the 37-year-old singer to promote the product, as he has gained huge attention through a parody skit of the commercial on last month’s Saturday Night Live (SNL) Korea.
The commercial for the Green Plum drink first aired in 1999, the same year when the company launched the brand. But the 15-second video clip was ridiculed by many viewers because the producer put too much emphasis on the sugary lines.
The drink then rose as a nostalgic symbol, as it was featured in the 2012 tvN series “Reply, 1997,” a drama set in late 1990s Korea.
Meanwhile, to appreciate Jo Sung-mo’s parody of the commercial on SNL Korea, Woongjin Foods distributed 2,000 bottles of the drink to show appreciation at Jo’s solo concert held in Blue Square, central Seoul on May 31.
The company hasn’t confirmed the shooting schedule yet.
