의사(義士)와 테러리스트 가브릴로프린치프
1914년 6월 28일, 사라예보에서 오스트리아-헝가리제국 프란츠-페르디난드 황태자 부처가 스무 살의 청년 가브릴로프린치프의 총에 맞아 사망한다. 이것이 빌미가 되어 인류 역사의 대재앙 제1차 세계대전이 발발하게 되었다. 역사는 프린치프를 세르비아의 민족주의 지하테러단체 ‘검은손’의 멤버이자 세르비아 비밀경찰과 군부의 지원을 받아 ‘범행을 저질렀다’고 기술하지만, 그는 세르비아의 국민 영웅이다. 세르비아에는 안중근 의사와 같은 성인(聖人)인 것이다. 1차 대전 발발 100주년을 맞아 ‘민족과 국가를 위해’ 생명을 바친 애국정신이 나라마다 재평가되면서 그를 저격범으로 보았던 시각이 점차 변했다.그가 황태자 부처를 저격한 6월 28일은 세르비아의 중요한 기념일인 ‘비도브단’(Vidovdan: 성 비투스의 날)이다. 1389년 코소보전투에서 세르비아의 라자르 대공이 오스만 제국의 무라트 1세 대군을 맞아 장렬히 전사한 날이다. 비록 전쟁에서는 졌지만 ‘이슬람의 저지를 위해 희생한 거룩한 기독교정신’과 적에게 굴하지 않는 세르비아 민족의 독립정신을 기리는 성스러운 기념일이다. 세르비아가 알바니아계 주민이 차지한 민족의 성지인 코소보를 결코 포기할 수 없다는 이유도 여기에 있다. 바로 이 성스러운 기념일에 프린치프는 거사하였고 그의 ‘대세르비아’의 꿈은 전후 유고슬라비아왕국 창건으로 실현되었다. 정작 그는 1918년 4월 전쟁이 끝나기 직전 감옥에서 죽었지만, 종전 직후인 1920년에 유고슬라비아의 ‘민족영웅’으로 추서되었고, 지금 동유럽 일곱 개 도시에 그의 이름을 딴 거리가 있으며 프린치프 박물관도 있다. 1921년에는 6월 28일이 공식 기념일로 제정되었다. 오는 6월 28일 사라예보에 거사 100주년을 맞아 거대한 그의 기념비가 제막된다. 베오그라드에도 똑같은 복제품이 세워진다.
이런 프린치프를 ‘테러범’으로 묘사한 호주의 역사학자 크리스토퍼클라크의 책이 간행되자 세르비아 대통령까지 나서 맹렬하게 비난했다. 진정한 전쟁범죄는 발칸반도를 침략한 오스트리아 제국이지 이를 응징한 프린치프가 아니라는 것이다. 역사적 사건의 주인공은 바라보는 시각에 따라 ‘의사’가 되기도, ‘테러리스트’가 되기도 한다. 오늘의 세계적인 추세는 자신이 보기에 테러리스트일지 몰라도 상대방에게 의사이면 의사로 인정해 주는 것이다. 이것이 국제적인 예의가 되었다. 런던의 한복판 트래펄가 광장은 프랑스가 해전에서 영국에 진 곳의 이름이지만, 이를 바꾸라는 프랑스 사람은 없다. 새삼 일본을 생각한다.
