전쟁이 젊은이들의 희망이라고?
2007년 1월 일본 아사히신문이 발행하는 잡지 ‘논좌(論座)’에 한 편의 글이 실렸다. ‘마루야마마사오(丸山眞男)를 후려치고 싶다. 31살 프리터. 희망은 전쟁’이란 제목이다. 필자 아카기도모히로(赤木智弘)는 불황의 시작과 함께 사회에 나와 안정적인 직장을 갖지 못하고 아르바이트로 생계를 꾸려가는 중. 그는 이 글에서 ‘더 나은 미래를 기대할 수 없는 젊은이들에게 전쟁은 희망’이라고 말한다. 평화롭고 안정적인 일본이란 가진 자에게만 이로운 사회일 뿐 약자들에게는 “일본이 군국화해 전쟁이 일어나고 많은 사람이 죽어 사회가 유동화(流動化)하는 것”이 유일한 탈출구라는 논지다. 그가 후려치고 싶다고 말한 마루야마마사오는 일본의 전후 민주주의를 대표하는 정치학자다.자극적인 주장을 침착하고 논리정연하게 전개하는 이 글은 논란이 된 동시에 비슷한 불안감을 지닌 일본 젊은이들의 공감을 얻었다. ‘강한 일본’을 주장하며 ‘혐한(嫌韓)’ 운동을 이끌고 있는 ‘재특회(재일특권을 허용하지 않는 시민 모임)’가 생겨난 것도 이 즈음이다. 인터넷으로 모인 20~30대가 주축인 이 단체는 “재일 한국인이 일본인의 권리를 빼앗고 있다”고 주장하며 욱일기와 나치기를 들고 거리를 행진한다. 이들의 활동을 추적한 책 『거리로 나온 넷우익』을 쓴 야스다고이치(安田浩一)는 이들이 가진 상실감과 인정욕구에 주목했다. “아무것도 가질 수 없는 사람들에게 ‘애국’이란 유일한 존재증명이 되기도 한다.”
전쟁 할 수 있는 일본을 향한 아베 총리의 거침없는 행보에는 이렇게 파괴적인 충동에 끌리는 젊은 세대의 지지가 뒷받침되었던 게 사실이다. 총리의 야스쿠니 신사 참배에 30대 남성의 60% 이상이 찬성하고, 도쿄 도지사 선거에서도 극우 후보에게 20~30대의 표가 몰렸다. 하지만 하나의 목소리만 있는 것은 아니다. 지난 주말 도쿄 시내에서 열린 집단적 자위권 반대 시위에는 트위터 등을 통해 소식을 알게 된 학생과 직장인 등 1600여 명이 모였다. 이들은 ‘전쟁하는 나라 절대 반대’ ‘안티 파시스트’ 등을 외치며 신주쿠 일대를 행진했다. 그간 조용하기만 했던 일본 친구들의 SNS에도 국민들에게 최소한의 동의도 구하지 않은 채 젊은이들을 위험에 빠뜨릴 수 있는 결정을 내린 아베 내각에 대한 분노가 끓어오른다. 전쟁이 과연 누군가의 희망이 될 수 있을까. 상상 속의 전쟁이 아닌 현실로서의 전쟁을 똑바로 바라볼 때가 온 것인지 모른다.
