Court upholds charges against Ryu

Ryu Si-won

The Supreme Court upheld a 7 million won fine ($6,450) imposed on actor Ryu Si-won yesterday for using violence against his estranged wife and tracking her whereabouts with a GPS device.

Ryu, a 42-year-old singer-actor whose heyday was in the 1990s and early 2000s, was found guilty of abusing his 33-year-old wife, only identified as Cho. He was also charged with installing a GPS tracker on his wife’s car in 2011, which remained there for several months.

Cho pressed charges against Ryu last February, citing physical violence and blackmail, which was followed by Ryu’s lawsuit against her soon afterwards in November the same year. Ryu said that Cho was lying in previous court proceedings.

Ryu and Cho tied the knot in October 2010. They have a 3-year-old daughter.

Better known as the “immortal prince” in Japan, Ryu is considered one of the originators of Hallyu, or the Korean Wave, along with actor Bae Yong-joon, 42.
