Can Lotte brothers speak of safety?
One of the most interesting parts of the Lotte family feud was Shin Dong-bin’s news conference. In addition to the rivalry between the brothers, the support of the father, mother and uncle and Lotte’s management structure, I was curious how fluent Chairman Shin Dong-bin is in Korean. I couldn’t help but think it was strange that the Korean brothers who head one of the largest conglomerates in Korea could be so terrible in Korean. I am surely not the only who thinks this as footage from the interview with Korean subtitles was aired all day, showing him slur, “I have utmost respect for my father.”It is not the first time I have paid attention to other people’s proficiency in speaking Korean. When crewmembers of JTBC’s “Nonsummit” appeared on JoongAng Ilbo’s internet television, I was curious if the Italians and the Germans spoke Korean fluently. On the show they spoke fluent Korean with a slight accent. It was amazing to see an Egyptian, Ghanaian, Pole, Greek, Norwegian, Brazilian and a Nepalese chatting in Korean.
While each of them has different reasons and circumstances, they all agree they learned the language because they love Korea and its people.
The Lotte brothers’ command of Korean made me think they like making money in Korea but may not be very fond of Korea or Korean people.
In the past few years working as a national news reporter at JTBC, I covered a series of accidents and controversies at Lotte World II. I found Lotte’s lukewarm attitude strange, but I needed to verify if they prioritized Koreans’ safety. As well as accidents in construction sites and sink holes in the area, the safety at Seoul Air Base, 5.5 kilometers (3.4 miles) away from Lotte World II should be addressed.
I began investigating the situation after a reserve Air Force general tipped me off that fighter pilots were worried about Lotte World II. While Air Force insiders raised the possibility of Air Force planes crashing into the building and claimed the skyscraper should be no higher than 203 meters, the Lee Myung-bak administration approved construction of the 555-meter-tall tower. Instead, the runway in Seoul Air Base is tilted by three degrees to avoid the danger.
However, specialists in Air Force issues have argued the modification would not be enough to completely remove the risk, and Lotte did not provide further explanation as the project was already approved.
I served in the Air Force and know how valuable each pilot is. Combat flight is already full of unexpected situations, and even a veteran pilot may confuse the sky and the sea and get into trouble. When abnormal signs are detected from Dokdo Island to the five islands in the West Sea, they risk their lives and fly to protect Korean territory.
Can Lotte assure them that there is no added safety concern?

롯데 사태를 지켜보며 내가 가장 주목한 장면은 신동빈 회장의 기자회견이다. 형제 간 알력이나 부친ㆍ모친ㆍ삼촌의 마음, 롯데 지배구조 같은 게 다 이목을 끌지만 나의 신경은 ‘신 회장이 한국말을 어떻게 할까’에 쏠려있었다. 아무리 생각해봐도 한국 기업을 주무르는 한국인 형제가 어떻게 이렇게 한국말을 못하는지 이상하다는 생각에 자꾸 인터뷰를 보게 된다. 신 회장의 육성을 보도하며 “아버니므르 많이 존겨하고 있스므니다”(아버님을 많이 존경하고 있습니다)라고 자막을 쓴 엽기 방송 화면이 종일 화제가 된 걸 보면 나만 그런 건 아닌 모양이다. 내가 남의 한국말 실력을 집중 관찰한 게 처음은 아니다. 얼마전 JTBC ‘비정상회담’출연자들이 중앙일보 인터넷 방송(www.joongang.co.kr)에 나와 ‘비정상칼럼’토크쇼 첫 녹화를 진행할 때 ‘진짜 이탈리아ㆍ독일 사람이 한국말을 유창하게 할까’하는 의구심으로 지켜봤다. 참 잘했다. 발음은 어색하지만 우리말 구사가 물 흐르듯 했다. 이집트ㆍ가나ㆍ그리스ㆍ폴란드ㆍ노르웨이ㆍ브라질ㆍ네팔에서 온 사람들이 수다 떠는 화면을 볼 때마다 신기하기만 하다. 이들은 왜 한국어를 배웠을까. 각각 이유와 계기는 차이가 있겠지만 다들 말하는 한 가지는 “한국과 한국사람을 좋아하기 때문”이다. 롯데 오너 형제의 한국말 솜씨를 보면서 ‘이들이 한국의 돈을 좋아할진 몰라도 한국이나 한국사람을 좋아하지는 않는구나’하는 생각이 들었다. 뒤이어 불안이 찾아왔다. JTBC 사회부에서 일했던 지난 몇년 간 제2롯데월드를 둘러싼 사고와 논란이 끊이지 않았다. 그 때마다 롯데의 시큰둥한 태도가 이상했는데 이젠 그들이 과연 한국 사람의 안전에 최우선 순위를 두는지 확인해야겠다. 공사장 사고나 주변 싱크홀도 그렇지만 나는 공군기가 뜨고 내리는 5.5㎞ 거리의 서울공항 안전 문제를 다시 묻고 싶다. 이 사안은 한 예비역 공군 장성이 “제2롯데월드 때문에 공군 전투조종사들 걱정이 이만저만 아니다”고 알려주면서 취재가 시작됐다. 사실이었다. 공군 핵심 간부들이 공군기의 충돌 가능성 등‘안전 측면에 명백한 문제’를 지적하며 높이가 203m를 넘어선 안된다고 줄곧 주장했으나 이명박 정부 들어 555m 높이로 허가가 났다. 대신 서울공항 활주로 각도를 3도 틀어서 충돌 위험을 피했다는 거다. “그 정도로는 어림 없다”는 공군 출신과 전문가 주장에 반론을 듣고 싶었지만 이미 허가가 났기 때문인지 롯데 측은 상세하게 설명해 주지 않았다. 나는 공군 출신이어서 전투조종사가 얼마나 귀한지를 안다. 베테랑 조종사가 하늘과 바다를 착각해 사고를 당할 만큼 전투비행은 예측 불허 상황이다. 독도부터 서해 5도까지 이상 징후가 보이면 F15-K를 몰고가 한국 영토 수호에 목숨을 거는 사람들이다. 롯데는 그들의 안전에 한 점 우려가 없다고 대답할 수 있는가. 강주안 디지털 뉴스 에디터
