Success all boils down to the people
Upon watching the movie “Assassination,” I thought I had forgotten about the suffering, sacrifices and heroism of our nation’s independence fighters.I realized earlier this month that I had forgotten about Lee Byung-chul, Chung Ju-yung and Koo In-hwoi - or at least not given them much thought. Their stories are still relevant and inspiring. Lee, Samsung’s founder, ignored opposition from investors and challenged the semiconductor business at age 73. Hyundai founder Chung Ju-yung sold two oil tankers before he even had a shipbuilding yard, and LG founder Koo In-hwoi was an electronics industry pioneer, introducing the first radio and television to Korea.
While people are fascinated by Steve Jobs and Elon Musk, Korea’s tycoons have more dramatic stories. They built world-class companies with their bare hands on the back of the devastation of colonization and World War II. They truly are legends.
But all these stories are bygone dreams and old songs. We awoke in the 21st century to a Korea in crisis and the president continues to call for an economic overhaul. We all talk about the seriousness of youth unemployment, the ordeal of early retirement and the bankruptcy risks for small businesses. The decline of the manufacturing sector, the export crisis and the threat from China are dispiriting. However, the independence fighters saw undying hope in chaos. Lee and Chung built business empires in a much worse environment. We may be too scared now, underestimating our own caliber.
Posco Chairman Kwon Oh-joon said that the only way to get out of the crisis is to readopt that founding spirit. It’s the best strategy to start anew. So let us brood over the challenges Lee and Chung faced, and let’s study those who helped them accomplish their visions.
The legends that are Samsung and Hyundai were created by men who were well educated and had the determination to succeed. The growth engine for the next century is not semiconductors or automobiles, but people. The well-educated and visionaries with dreams are Korea’s engines. Just like 70 years ago, Korea’s best asset is the public.
We need to invest more on people to allow them to succeed. That’s why it is especially regrettable and tragic that 410,000 young Koreans between ages 20 and 29 are without jobs. Korean education has been lost now for quite some time. At this rate, the growth engine that is our people may die away. We don’t have much time left to plan Korea’s next 100 years.

영화 ‘암살’을 보며 오래 잊고 살았다는 생각이 들었다. 독립투사들의 활약과 고난, 희생을. 학창시절엔 그들의 얘기에 참 많이 억울해하고 분노했었는데. 중앙일보가 17일부터 연재하고 있는 ‘100년 갈 성장엔진을 키우자’란 기사를 기획하면서 한동안 잊고 있었다는 걸 알았다. 이병철ㆍ정주영ㆍ구인회의 무용담을. 다시 봐도 흥미롭고 어떤 대목에선 가슴 벅차다. 일흔셋 나이에 투자자들의 반대를 뿌리치고 반도체 사업을 시작한 이병철 삼성 회장의 도전, 조선소도 없으면서 유조선을 두 척이나 판 정주형 현대 회장의 배짱, 최초의 국산 라디오와 TV를 내놓은 전자산업의 선구자 구인회 LG 회장. 스티브 잡스(애플 창업자), 일론 머스크(테슬라모터스 창업자)의 성공 스토리에 열광하지만 극적 요소라면 이쪽이 한 수 위다. 식민지와 전쟁을 거친 황무지에서 맨주먹으로 세계 일류 기업을 일군 대하드라마에 감히 대적할 수 있겠나. 기적ㆍ신화라 이름 붙여도 좋다. 그러나 이건 모두 꿈이다. 흘러간 옛 노래다. 꿈에서 깬 현실은 21세기 ‘위기의 대한민국’이다. 모두가 위기를 이야기 한다. 대통령조차 “경제 전반에 대한 대수술이 불가피하다”며 긴장시킨다. 청년 실업의 심각성을, 조기 퇴직의 고충을, 자영업자 도산의 위기를 이야기한다. 더 있다. 제조업의 쇠락, 수출의 위기, 중국의 위협… 대한민국은 절망하고 있다. 그러나 독립투사들은 위기와 혼돈 속에서 사그라들지 않는 희망을 찾았다. 이병철ㆍ정주영은 지금과는 비교도 안되는 척박한 땅을 딛고 일어섰다. 혹 우리는 필요 이상으로 겁을 먹고 있는 건 아닌가. 우리의 실력을 지나치게 과소평가 하고 있는 건 아닌가. ‘100년 갈 성장엔진을 만들자’는 중앙일보 기획기사는 ‘대한민국 원기 회복 프로젝트’다. IT를 결합한 스마트화를 통해 원가를 절감하고, 고부가가치 제품에 집중하며, 연구개발 비중을 획기적으로 높여 중국의 추격을 따돌리자는 제안이다. 그래서 자신감을 갖자는 ‘대한민국 감동 프로젝트’이기도 하다. 광복 후 70년의 경제 기적을 만들었듯 대한민국 100년 신화를 만들자는 것이다. 권오준 포스코 회장은 “위기에서 벗어나는 길은 창업정신으로 돌아가는 것”이라고 말했다. 다시 시작하는 데 이만한 것이 없다. 이병철ㆍ정주영 회장의 도전을 다시 곱씹어보는 이유도 여기에 있다. 그리고 그들을 둘러싼 사람들을 본다. 잘 교육받고, 할 수 있다는 의지로 똘똘 뭉친 사람들. 삼성ㆍ현대의 신화는 그런 사람들이 만들었다. ‘100년 갈 성장엔진’은 반도체ㆍ자동차에 앞서 사람이다. 잘 교육받은 인재, 꿈꾸는 몽상가가 우리의 엔진이다. 70년 전에 그랬듯이 앞으로도 우리의 최대 자원은 사람일 수밖에 없다. 사람에 더 투자해 그들이 또다른 이병철ㆍ정주영이 되도록 해야 한다. 41만 청년실업자(20~29세)가 안타깝고 가슴 아픈 이유도 여기에 있다. 사람을 길러낼 교육마저 길을 잃은지 오래다. 이러다 사람이란 성장엔진이 꺼져버릴지도 모른다. 대한민국 100년 대계를 위한 시간이 많이 남지 않았다. 김준현 경제부문 기자
