[분수대] 조용히 외치는 조형물
“헐, 이거였어?” 십중팔구의 반응이다. 발품 팔아 찾아갔는데 인증샷 몇 방 찍고 나면 더 할 게 없다. 관광객이 몰려 있어 샷의 각도도 마땅치가 않다. 벨기에 브뤼셀의 ‘오줌싸개 소년’은 유명무실 관광 명소의 대표급이다. 60㎝ 안팎의, 사진으로 봐 온 동상이 볼거리의 전부다. 그냥 사람만 많다.하지만 사연을 알면 약간의 감흥을 얻을 수도 있다. 동상의 연원에 대한 설이 여러 개 있는데 가장 정설로 회자되는 것은 ‘외침에 맞선 소년’ 전설이다. 내용은 이렇다. 14세기에 브뤼셀 성이 외적에게 포위됐다. 침략자들은 성곽에 폭약을 붙이고 도화선에 불을 댕겼다. 성곽 위에서 이를 본 한 소년이 오줌을 싸 불을 꺼버렸다. 성은 지켜졌고, 브뤼셀 사람들은 힘을 합해 적을 물리쳤다. 그 뒤 오줌 싼 자리에 나무로 소년상을 만들어 놓았다.
나무상이 동상으로 교체된 것은 1619년이다. 조각가 제롬 듀케누아가 만든 원래 동상은 시립박물관에 있고, 지금 그 자리에 놓인 것은 1965년에 만든 복제품이다. 전설의 사실 여부를 떠나 벨기에인들은 이 동상을 외세에 대한 항거의 상징으로 여긴다.

그리스 아테네의 파르테논 신전으로 올라가는 길 왼편에는 뉴아크로폴리스뮤지엄이 있다. 6년 전에 세워진 이 박물관의 핵심 전시물은 파르테논 신전의 부조들이다. 부조를 외벽에 있던 대로 옮겨다 놓았기 때문에 전시장은 4개의 면으로 구성돼 있는데 곳곳이 비어 있다. 유실된 일부를 제외한 대부분의 빈자리는 주그리스 대사였던 엘긴이 영국으로 가져가 그리스가 보유하고 있지 않은 부분이다. 영국이 대영박물관에 ‘엘긴 마블’이라는 이름으로 모셔다 놓고 돌려달라 해도 들은 척을 않자 그리스는 이처럼 박물관을 만들어 약탈을 고발하고 있다.
스코틀랜드 에든버러 복판에는 『아이반호』의 작가인 월터 스콧을 기리는 기념탑이 있다. 주변과 별로 어울리지 않게 높이 솟구쳐 있다. 이 기념탑의 높이(61.1m)가 런던의 트래펄가 광장에 있는 넬슨 제독 기념비의 높이(51.6m)를 능가한다는 게 스코틀랜드인의 자랑 중 하나다. 스코틀랜드 정체성의 상징이기도 하다.
주한 일본대사관 앞의 위안부 소녀상에 대해 한국 정부가 ‘적절히 해결되도록 노력한다’고 일본에 약속했다. 해결은 이전을 뜻한다. 29일 점심시간에 가 보니 한 남성이 자신의 목도리를 풀어 소녀의 맨발에 둘러주고 있었다. 평소보다 구경 온 사람이 많기도 했다. ‘적절한 해결’이 쉽지 않을 것 같다.
