[글로벌 아이] ‘위안부’문제, 젊은이들과 정부
“‘일본군 위안부’ 문제가 최종적으로 불가역적으로 해결됐다”는 우리 정부의 발표 이후 미국에서 만난 한국의 젊은이들이 자주 떠오른다.
대학생 뮤지컬 감독 김현준(25)씨도 그중 한 명이다. 그는 지난해 여름 맨해튼 오프 브로드웨이에 뮤지컬 ‘컴포트우먼(COMFORT WOMEN)’을 올렸다. 미국인들이 위안부 문제를 너무도 모른다는 사실에 충격을 받고 위안부 문제를 효과적으로 알리기 위한 방편으로 생각해 낸 것이 뮤지컬이었다.
그는 기획부터 제작과 연출까지 도맡았다. 영어 대본도 자신이 썼다. 대학생의 겁 없는 도전이었다. 가장 어려운 것은 제작비 마련이었다. 국내 대기업들의 후원을 기대하고 e메일을 보냈지만 받지 못했다. 도움은 다른 곳에서 왔다. 한인 가게는 정상가의 4분의 1로 옷감을 내줬고, 배우와 스태프들은 보수를 일절 받지 않겠다며 힘을 보탰다. 뮤지컬은 어렵사리 막을 올릴 수 있었다.
김 감독은 요즘 새로운 도전을 진행 중이다. ‘컴포트우먼’을 브로드웨이에 올리는 일과, 한국과 중국에서의 공연이다.
김자혜(37) 허드슨문화재단 대표도 있다. 그는 2014년 뉴저지주 유니언시티에 일본군 위안부 기림비가 건립되도록 한 주역이다. 유니언시티 교향악단 예술감독이기도 한 김 대표는 “위안부 문제는 지나간 과거가 아니라 세계 여성의 보편적인 인권 문제”라고 시 관계자들을 설득해 냈다. 기림비는 시 정부에 의해 맨해튼이 한눈에 내려다보이는 곳에 세워졌다. 김 대표는 위안부 피해자의 참상을 다룬 연극 ‘컴포트(COMFORT)’를 만들어 브로드웨이에 올리기도 했다. “연기인데도 너무 무섭고 공포스럽다”고 말하던 미국 배우들의 표정과 객석에서 몸을 떨던 관객들의 모습이 지금도 기억 속에 또렷하다. 김 대표는 지난해 위안부 할머니들을 위한 그림대회를 한국과 미국에서 열고 전시회를 했다. 그는 이 행사를 매년 열 계획이다.

김 감독과 김 대표를 비롯한 많은 한국 젊은이의 노력과 분투는 자발적이다. 누가 시켜서 한 것이 아니다. 정부는 멀찌감치 떨어져 있었다. 외교부와 현지의 영사관은 오히려 뒷짐을 지고 있는 경우가 많았다. 이들이 새삼 생각나는 것은 위안부 문제의 참된 해결을 위해 꼭 필요한 것을 제시하고 있기 때문이다. 그것은 위안부 문제의 진실을 전 세계에 계속해서 알리는 일이다. 김 감독은 “수많은 사람이 알게 되면 일본이 역사를 지우려 해도 지울 수 없고 지워지지 않을 것”이라고 말했다.
나도 같은 생각이다. 위안부 문제의 만행을 알게 된 세계 각국 사람들은 누구나 큰 충격을 받는다. 그러곤 왜 제대로, 더 적극적으로 알리지 않느냐고 되묻는다.
위안부 문제의 진실을 세계인에게 알리고 자라나는 세대에게 교육하는 것은 우리 정부가 오래전부터 역점을 기울였어야 할 일이다. 지금부터라도 정부는 여기에 매진하라. 그래야 현 정부가, 우리 세대가 후손들에게 그나마 덜 부끄럽다.
