Historic Go match set for March 9

A historic match between the world’s most renowned Go player, Lee Se-dol, and Google DeepMind’s artificial intelligence (AI) system AlphaGo will begin March 9, in Gwanghwamun, central Seoul.

유명 바둑 프로기사 이세돌 9단과 구글 딥마인드의 인공지능 ‘알파고’가 3월9일 서울 광화문에서 세기의 대국을 벌인다.
“I heard the program is getting better at Go by the day, but I think I can manage to win the match this time,” said Lee Se-dol at the press briefing held on Monday by the Korea Baduk Association.

한국기원에서 월요일 열린 기자회견에서 이세돌 9단은 “알파고가 매일 바둑 실력이 향상되고 있다고 들었지만, 이번 대국에선 내가 이길 것으로 본다”고 말했다.
Go, also called “baduk” in Korean, is a complicated board game in which two people compete to occupy more of a board with either black or white stones. The game has long been a challenge for computer programmers, who see it as one of the ultimate tests of an AI system’s capabilities.

바둑은 두 사람이 검은 돌이나 흰 돌을 판 위에 두어 더 많은 집을 차지하는 경쟁을 하는 복잡한 보드게임이다. 컴퓨터 프로그래머들에게 바둑은 인공지능의 능력을 검증하는 최후의 테스트 중 하나일 정도로 오랫동안 도전의 대상이었다.
The upcoming series of games, which fall on March 9, 10, 12, 13 and 15, will take place each day at 1 p.m. at the Four Seasons Hotel, in Gwanghwamun, central Seoul. Each match will be played without handicaps and under Chinese rules. The grand prize is $1 million.

대국은 서울 광화문 포시즌스호텔에서 9일, 10일, 12일, 13일, 15일 오후 1시에 열린다. 각 대국은 핸디캡 없이 중국 룰로 진행된다. 우승 상금은 100만 달러이다.
Lee turned pro at 12 years old, and has won 18 titles from tournaments around the world. He is currently recognized as one of the best Go players in decades. He acquired ninth dan, the highest rank in the game, in 2003.
이 9단은 12살에 프로기사가 됐고 국제 바둑대회를 18번 우승했다. 이 9단은 최근 수 십 년 동안 가장 뛰어난 바둑기사 중 한 명으로 인정받고 있다. 2003년에 바둑에서 최고 고수인 9단에 올랐다.
But his competitor, AlphaGo, defeated European champion Fan Hui, a second dan, five to zero last October. Lee and other experts say the program skills are still lower than the best human Go player, which should give Lee the advantage.

그러나 대국 상대자 알파고는 지난해 10월 유럽 바둑 챔피언 판후이 2단을 5대 0으로 완승했다. 이 9단과 전문가들은 알파고의 바둑실력이 아직은 최고수 인간 바둑 기사보다는 낮다고 말한다. 이런 점에서는 이 9단이 유리한 것으로 점쳐 진다.
But all acknowledge they can’t guarantee a victory for Lee because the system can evolve its abilities on its own through self-learning.

그러나 알파고가 자가학습으로 바둑 실력을 향상시킬 수 있기 때문에 아무도 이 9단이 이길 것이라고 장담을 못한다.
