The phenomenon of Trump
Until three months ago, many Americans and Korean Americans were saying, “I will move to another country if Trump is elected president.” But that bravado has died down as Donald Trump has gained a real chance of becoming the president of the United States. When he announced his candidacy in June 2015, many thought it was a publicity stunt. Then, his run became more serious, and now he is one of the most likely candidates. If he wins six Super Tuesday states, some speculate he will become the Republican presidential candidate.In recent political history, no other politician has made nonsense into common sense like Trump. He has made so many unacceptable comments that would force a normal candidate to resign. When a female anchor asked him a sensitive question, he accused her of having “blood coming out of her whatever.” He also said no one would vote for Carly Fiorina after seeing her face. But these ludicrous remarks boosted his popularity, much less pressuring him to resign. He called Mexican and Hispanic immigrants criminals and rapists, but Hispanic voters are supporting Trump. The progress is incomprehensible.
Something more powerful than common sense is sweeping the United States. Whether it takes the nation in a positive or negative direction remains to be seen.
On Feb. 8, the night before the New Hampshire primaries, 5,000 supporters gathered at the Verizon Arena in Manchester. Their eyes and cheers were full of discontent and frustration, and I could see a strong desire for a revolution. What they want is different from the change that Barack Obama advocated in 2008. They want to completely redesign the playing field. The first goals are to drive out establishment politicians in Washington, destroy income discrepancy and return America to the country they believe it once was.
They believe only a candidate as radical as Trump can accomplish these goals. The time when Jeb Bush could easily win the game with his royal family background and super PAC support is gone. Trump reads what people want in the future, whereas Bush is trapped in the past.
The prediction that Hillary Clinton will win for sure if Trump becomes the Republican nominee also could be wrong. Supporters of Bernie Sanders would not necessarily vote for Clinton. Instead, they may choose Trump, who is at the other extreme but advocates revolutionary changes. There are also more land mines on Clinton’s field.
Nevertheless, having Trump as president is rather absurd, even when he has demonstrated an ability to tap into something in people.
His inability to manage his anger is one of his biggest problems. He cannot control his temper. He has blown up several companies in his business career, but managing a nation is different. The impact would spread around the world. The president has the ability to launch nuclear missiles. I am worried, and I laugh uncomfortably that Trump is really the best option America has right now.

.“트럼프가 대통령 되면 난 이민 갈 거야.” 불과 3개월 전까지만 해도 그랬다. 주로 한국계 동포들이 그런 이야기를 했지만 간혹 미국인 중에 그런 말을 하는 이도 있었다. 그런데 요즘은 그런 이야기 듣기 힘들다. 진짜 이민 가야 할지 모르기 때문이다. 그만큼 ‘트럼프 대통령’의 가능성이 현실로 다가왔다. 지난해 6월 출마선언 때만 해도 많은 이가 “쇼 하네~”라고 비웃었다. 그게 “진짜? 설마…”가 되더니 지금은 “이제 어떻게 되는 거야?”로 변했다. 다음달 1일 ‘수퍼 화요일’에 승리하면 트럼프가 공화당 후보로 굳어질 것이란 전망까지 나온다. 최근 정치사에서 트럼프만큼 비상식을 상식으로 만든 이도 없을 것이다. 그는 수많은 막말을 내뱉었다. 기존 상식으로 보면 하나같이 ‘즉각 후보 사퇴’감이다. 공격적 질문을 한 여성 진행자에게 “어디서든 피가 나오고 있었을 것”이라고 하고 “저 (여성) 얼굴을 보고 누가 대통령으로 찍겠느냐”고도 했다. 그런데 그게 사퇴도 실점도 아닌 득점이 됐다. 멕시코 이민자(히스패닉)를 범죄자나 성폭행범 취급했다. 하지만 정작 히스패닉 유권자들은 트럼프에게 몰표를 던지고 있다. 알다가도 모를 일이다. 그렇다면 뭔가 기존 상식과 틀을 뛰어넘는 엄청난 시대의 흐름이 미국을 휘감고 있다는 이야기다. 옳은 방향이냐 나쁜 방향이냐는 별개의 문제다. 뉴햄프셔주 경선 전날인 지난 8일 밤 맨체스터시 버라이즌 아레나에 모인 지지자 5000여 명의 눈빛과 함성에서 그 힌트를 얻었다. 불만과 분노에 가득 찬 그들에게서 엄청난 변혁(revolution)의 욕구를 느꼈다. 2008년 버락 오바마가 외쳤던 ‘변화(change)’와는 또 다르다. 그들은 아예 판을 바꾸려 한다. 워싱턴을 지배해 온 정치세력의 일소, 고착화된 소득 불균형의 파괴, ‘착한 미국’의 과감한 포기가 1차 지향점이다. 트럼프 정도의 과격한 후보가 아니면 그걸 이뤄내기 힘들 것으로 본다. 도중에 나가떨어진 젭 부시처럼 ‘로열패밀리’에 막강 ‘수퍼팩’만 갖추면 게임이 끝나는 시대는 지났다. 그럼 점에서 트럼프가 시대(미래)를 읽었다면 부시는 시대(과거)를 잃었다. 트럼프가 공화당 후보가 되면 본선에서 ‘클린턴 필승’이라 보는 예측도 잘못됐다. 힐러리 클린턴을 고전시킨 버니 샌더스 지지표가 클린턴에게 가리란 보장이 없다. 오히려 ‘극’은 다르지만 같은 변혁의 가치를 외치는 트럼프로 몰릴 가능성이 충분하다. 또 앞으로 터질 ‘지뢰밭’도 클린턴 쪽에 많다. 하지만 아무리 시대를 읽었다고 해도 ‘트럼프 대통령’은 부담스럽다. 무엇보다 그의 ‘분노 조절’ 능력이 문제다. ‘욱’ 하면 가만있지를 못한다. 사업이야 회사 몇 개 날리면 그만이지만 국가경영은 다르다. 전 세계로 불똥이 튄다. 더구나 미국의 대통령이란 핵 발사 버튼을 누르는 자리다. “너희는 그것밖에 안 되니?” 근심의 한편으로 미국을 마음껏 비웃는 요즘이다. 김현기 워싱턴 총국장 .
