After 24 years away, a return to television screens : Actor Park Joong-hoon on getting back to work

The 52-year-old actor is well known as the “Chungmuro star” for his many appearances in the so-called Chungmuro theater plays - a region in central Seoul filled with theaters big and small - such as his role in “Hamlet” in 1984, the year he made his debut. Park has since acted in plays, musicals and movies, but not many television dramas. Fans were excited to see him in the recently-wrapped drama “Bad Guys: City of Evil,” a sequel to the 2014 “Bad Guys” drama on cable channel OCN, as it was his first TV role on television in 24 years.
“It’s been 24 years [since I was] in a drama and seven [to appear] on screen,” said Park in an interview with Ilgan Sports, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily. “Since the drama was quite well-received, I’ve heard that young people are starting to call me ‘An Unknown Actor Whose Skills are Pretty Good.’ Young people obviously don’t know me. It was an interesting reaction.”
Despite his years of absence, Park’s resume is filled with many impressive accomplishments. In 2002, he was featured in the Hollywood film “The Truth about Charlie” - though it wasn’t particularly well received, it was his overseas debut - and, in 2007, he became the first Asian actor to hold a retrospective of his work in the United States at the Jacob Burns Film Center.
He took his next step with “Top Star” (2013), but as a director, not an actor. “I had always thought about directing, and I had a go at it when I got the chance. But it turns out that it’s not as easy as I thought. Getting investment was really hard, too. I thought that people would help me because I’m Park Joong-hoon, but I realized how naive I was.”
With “Bad Guys,” Park has come back down to earth, passionately carrying out all the scenes given to him. He may be full of scars and bruises from all the action scenes he had to pull off while playing an eager prosecutor up against the local criminals, but Park says he is happy to be back on screen in an interview with Ilgan Sports. The following are edited excerpts.
Q. “Bad Guys” is your first drama in 24 years. Is there a reason why you stayed away for so long? Was it on purpose?
A. I didn’t exactly avoid it, I just didn’t think it was for me. But I realized that I should take a break from only pursuing things I like, because then I would never change. Honestly, I never thought I’d be in another drama after 24 years. My mind was always filled with movies, and I wasn’t aware of the advancement of the [Korean] drama market. It’s spread across the world, the quality of the images is very high and the productions cost millions, even billions, of won - all this was happening right next to me, but I didn’t realize it. When I saw “Okja” (2017) that director Bong Joon-ho and Netflix worked together on, I really understood the idea of the different platforms [creating work].
As this is your first project after so many years of being away, you said that you would work like a newbie. What was that like?
I watched the director’s other works, and I really thought that he was a talented man. I told him that I’d do anything that he told me to do - not in a way that’s rude and effortless, but genuinely as a willing rookie. When he and I were on different pages, I’d share my thoughts with him for a few minutes and then just say okay to all his ideas.
It’s been 32 years since I started acting, but the first two months [of shooting the drama] were so hard because of the pressure to do well. I even woke up in the middle of the night sweating. But the director was really persistent, and he talked me through everything. My good performance comes from his acting lessons (laughs).
Did you get along with the younger actors?
When I made my debut, there were so many situations that I thought were unreasonable, but were nevertheless deemed inevitable because of the general social atmosphere. I didn’t want to, but there were times when I had to just keep my silence. Now, we try to solve the problems through conversations and reason, which I like very much. The younger actors are more thoughtful, too. The authoritative people have been left behind, and the senior actors shouldn’t want to be so. If you’ve already settled in the entertainment field, then you already have enough power.
Your fans were very happy to see you in your first drama in 24 years. Are you satisfied with how it came out?
I think that people were interested because it has been such a while since my last project, not necessarily because it was a drama. I’m really grateful that it helped me break out of my shell, and for everything else as well. Everyone that I worked with, from the staff members to the fellow actors, they were all very nice people. I got good energy from them and I also got to change my thinking about the drama industry.
You also tried directing a movie. What was that experience like?
It really wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be. It was hard getting investment. I couldn’t get a clear outcome as a director nor an actor, and that got me a little anxious about my future. When I was on the verge of thinking that I was going to lose both my skills [in acting and directing], the head of my agency came to me with the script for “Bad Guys.”
Do you have any curiosity in directing a drama?
None at all. I don’t have the talent. Truthfully, directing a movie is completely different from a drama. It’s like running - you have short-distance runners and marathon runners. The two are so different that you have different actors and directors [for the two mediums]. It’s amazing that some people who can do both, seeing that they’re so different.
Will your next project be as a director or as an actor?
I don’t have any specific thoughts in mind right now. If there’s good work, then I’d like to be a part of that - whether it be a drama or a movie. And there is, also, a script that I am working on and if that turns well, then I’ll be lucky enough to make that into a project.

박중훈 ”신인의 자세, 두 달간 식은 땀 흘리며 수면”
'충무로 스타' '영화배우' '할리우드 진출'
배우 박중훈(52)하면 떠오르는 수식어다. 한국영화계를 대표하는 인물이 많지만 그 중 다섯 손가락 안에는 꼭 박중훈이 있다.
충무로에서 기나긴 활동을 해오던 박중훈이 오랜만에 드라마로 눈을 돌렸다. 1994년 종영한 '머나먼 쏭바강' 이후 딱 24년만이다. 박중훈을 아는 기성세대들은 그의 드라마 컴백에 환호했다. "드라마는 24년만이고 연기는 7년만이에요. 드라마가 반응이 좀 있다보니 젊은 사람들이 저더러 '연기 잘하는, 모르는 배우'라고 했다고 해요. 젊은 사람들은 저를 당연히 모르겠죠. 재미있는 반응이었어요."
충무로의 톱스타 박중훈은 2000년대 중반 미국으로 건너갔다. 할리우드 '찰리의 진실'에 출연해 의미있는 경험을 쌓고 왔다. 국내서 흥행에 성공하진 못 했지만 할리우드 진출만으로 의미있었다. 2007년에는 아시아 배우 최초로 미국서 회고전을 개최했다. 2013년에는 직접 메가폰을 잡아 '톱스타'를 만들었다. "영화 연출은 예전부터 생각해뒀고 기회가 닿아 한 번 도전해봤지만 쉽지 않았어요. 투자도 힘들었고요. '박중훈이면 도와주겠지'라는 생각이 안일했단걸 깨닫게 했죠."
'나쁜 녀석들2'를 끝낸 박중훈은 영광의 상처가 많이 남았다. 무릎 인대가 늘어나고 여기저기 다친 곳 투성이다. 그 험한 액션신을 일부 대역만을 쓴 채 소화했다. 뛰고 치고 박고 싸우고 또 달리기를 수차례. "작품이 오랜만이기도 하고 몸의 회복 속도가 예전같지 않다는 걸 절실히 느꼈어요. 영광의 상처라고 하기엔 여기저기 다친 곳이 너무 많아 재활이 우선일 거 같네요. 하하"
박중훈은 와인을 즐긴다. 이날 본인이 직접 백팩에 가져온 와인 두 병을 꺼냈다. 1만원도 안 하는 저가 와인이란건 강조했다. 술이 술술 들어갈 때마다 사뭇 진지하면서도 위트 넘치는 박중훈을 위한 자리였다.
-드라마 출연이 24년만이에요. 그동안 기피한 이유가 있나요.
"기피라기보단 제 영역이 아니라고 생각했어요. 그러다가 고집하는 것도 적당히 해야지 안 그러면 영원히 바뀌지 않을 거 같았어요. 솔직히 드라마를 24년만에 하게 될 줄 몰랐어요. 온통 머릿속에 영화였거든요. 드라마 시장이 전세계로 뻗어나가고 화질이 좋아지고 제작비가 수백억원 들고 이런 걸 전혀 인지하지 못 하고 있었어요. 이번에 알고나니 신세계가 옆에서 벌어지고 있는데 저만 몰랐어요. 봉준호 감독이 넷플릭스와 작업 하는 걸 보고 이제 플랫폼 다양화가 현실화 됐다고 와 닿았어요."
-방송 전 신인의 자세로 하겠다고 했어요.
"'38사기동대'를 보면서 감독과 작가가 훌륭한 사람이라고 생각했어요. 감독에게도 시키는 대로 하겠다고 했어요. 성의 없어 보일 수 있는데 그런 의미가 아니라 진짜 신인배우의 마음으로요. 의견을 제시하고 감독과 생각이 달라도 몇 마디 주고 받은 후 '알겠다'고 넘어갔어요."
-자다가도 식은 땀을 흘릴 정도로 강박이었다고요.
"연기를 32년째 하고 있는데 잘해야한다는 강박 때문에 두 달 정도는 너무 고통스러웠어요. 자다가도 식은 땀을 흘렸으니깐요. 그럴 때 한동화 감독이 정말 집요하게 얘기하고 알려줬어요. 좋은 평가는 한동화 감독의 연기 지도 덕분이에요.(웃음)"
-후배들과는 잘 지냈나요.
"제가 데뷔했을 때는 비합리적인 상황이 너무 많았고 그럼에도 사회 전체적인 분위기가 거스를 수 없었어요. 그런 게 싫었는데 어쩔 수 없이 넘어가야할 부조리함이 많았어요. 지금은 서로 대화하고 논리적으로 얘기해 나가는 분위기가 좋았어요. 물론 그만큼 후배들의 생각도 깊어졌고요. 선배들도 그런 걸 원하면 안 되는 거고 권위적인 사람은 이미 도태됐어요. 연예계는 인기 있는 사람이 적당히 힘이 있어요."
-심리적 압박도 컸나봐요.
"아무래도 낯선 현장이고 오랜만에 드라마이다보니 적응기간이 필요했죠. 심리치료라도 받아야하나 싶을 정도로 힘들어요. 6개월간 사람들도 못 만난 인간관계도 다시 회복해야하고요."
-드라마가 24년만이라 대중은 신선했어요.
"연기를 오랜만에 해 관심을 가진 거 같아요. 꼭 드라마라서는 아니고요. 솔직히 요즘 잘하는 친구들 많은데 그런 배우들이 신선하지 제가 뭐라고."
-결과는 만족하나요.
"껍질을 부수게 해 준 것만으로 너무 고맙고 그 외에도 당연히 만족하죠. 제작진과 함께한 배우들 모두 좋은 사람들과의 작업이었어요. 좋은 기운도 많이 얻었고 드라마 업계에 대한 인식도 달라졌고요."
-24년만에 드라마 현장은 많이 달라져 있던가요.
"30년 넘게 연기하면서 내가 어떻게 될 지 모르고 연기한 건 처음이에요. 끝을 모르고 한 거죠. 현장에서 제가 죽는다는 소문이 싹 돌았어요. 물론 저도 몰랐고요. 연기하는 사람 입장에서 한편으로는 비참한 생각도 들더라고요. 당장 내일 상황을 모르니 '아 이러다 사라지나'라는 생각이요. 감독과 작가는 아는데 정작 배우인 본인은 모르니깐 답답하면서 비참했어요. 전체 시놉시스와 80% 대본은 받고 시작해야하지 않나 싶어요. 너무 낯설었어요."
-직접 영화 연출도 했어요.
"생각보다 쉽지 않더라고요. 투자도 힘들고 천재적인 시나리오나 기획이 있는 것도 아니니깐요. 감독으로도 뚜렷한 성과가 없고 배우로서도 상업적 가치가 떨어지다보니 불안한 마음도 없지 않았죠. '이러다가 둘 다 안 되겠다'는 마음을 먹던 찰나에 소속사 대표가 '나쁜 녀석들2'에 대해 적극적으로 권했어요. '할 생각이 있냐'는 종용을 오랜만에 받았어요. '38사기동대'를 봤고 감독과 작가에 대한 신뢰가 생겼죠."
-영화 감독을 했는데 드라마 연출은 생각없나요.
"능력이 없어요. 사실 영화와 드라마는 아예 달라요. 육상선수로 치면 단거리가 있고 장거리가 있잖아요. 아예 달라서 연기하는 배우도 연출하는 감독도 다르죠. 그럼에도 둘 다 겸업하는 연출가들을 보면 대단하고요."
다음 스텝은 배우인가요 감독인가요.
"기준은 없어요. 좋은 작품이 있으면 참여해야죠. 그게 영화든 드라마든. 또 구상하고 있는 시나리오가 있는데 잘 진전되면 제작까지 이어질 수 있을 거고요."
