Balancing studies and spotlights: Yoo Seon-ho, known as a ‘Produce 101’ contestant, is ready to take the stage

Yoo worked alongside renowned singer songwriter Lee Jin-ah to create his first EP titled “Spring, Seonho,” which was released in April. The album is filled with songs that fit the spring season and capture Yoo’s youth.
“I learned a lot from working with Lee,” said Yoo in an interview with Ilgan Sports, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily. Yoo added, “I was simply a fan listening to her songs, but thanks to the agency, I got to work with her as a singer.” Yoo shared his experience as a solo artist so far, and living a double life as a high school student.
The following are edited excerpts from the interview.
Q. I heard you placed first on your Korean and Social Science practice tests.
A. I was able to easily solve them because they were all things I had already learned in middle school. When I called my mom to tell her the good news, she didn’t believe me. But I don’t think happiness comes from getting good grades.
How do you get to school?
I usually use public transportation but take the taxi when school ends too late. These days, I often take the subway, and nobody notices me. Everyone is busy on their smartphones or distracted. I don’t think they would notice even if there was an alien on the train.
Is it hard balancing school and your work schedule?
I think waking up in the morning is the hardest part. But I need to do my best.
What was it like performing on Mnet’s “M Countdown” as a solo artist?
I was very anxious, and I think the nerves came from my uncomfortable state. It was, in a way, more nerve-wracking than my very first fan meeting.
Did you have a team of supporters?
Jinho and Shinwon of Pentagon came to support me. It was a prerecording that took place at 2 a.m., but all the employees from our label came out. I truly felt loved by my agency.
What’s your secret to receiving so much love at Cube Entertainment?
I think I’m good at greeting people and I try to talk to many people at the company. I visit our office at least three or four times a day.
What’s your favorite song on your album?
My absolute favorite is “A Blue Star.” It’s a ballad. The lead track “Maybe Spring” is also great, but I had a hard time because I had to use a new vocal technique.
Is there any particular artist you would like to collaborate with?
I want to work with either Yook Sung-jae from BtoB or Yeo One from Pentagon. A lot of people at our agency told me that I resemble Yook and Yeo One, and I think it would be a lot of fun to work with them.

유선호 "지하철 타고 등교, 아무도 못 알아봐"
9개월 만에 만난 유선호는 고등학생이 됐고, 가수의 꿈을 이뤘으며 하고 싶은 음악에 대한 주관도 제법 뚜렷해졌다. "가수가 되고 싶다는 장래희망을 조금 빨리 이뤘지만 아직은 멀었어요. 더 훌륭한 사람이 되려고요. 내가 하는 일을 더 확실하게 잘 해내는 사람이요."
지난 11일 발매된 유선호 첫 번째 미니앨범 '봄, 선호'는 풋풋하고 맑은 이미지의 그와 가장 잘 어울리는 봄을 주제로했다. 싱어송라이터 이진아가 작사 작곡한 타이틀곡 '봄이 오면'은 소중한 사람과 함께 걷고 싶은 소년의 떨리는 마음을 담은 봄 캐럴이다.
듣는 순간 편안한 미소를 머금게 가는 분위기가 '큐브의 사랑둥이' 유선호와 닮았다. 유선호는 "데뷔하고나서 소속사 식구들이 많은 축하를 해주셨어요. 새벽 2시 음악방송 사전녹화에도 다 와주시고, 편지도 써주시고 정말 예쁨받고 있다는 걸 온몸으로 느끼는 중이에요"라고 웃었다.
이제 사회생활 첫 발을 뗀 유선호는 다음 변신을 위한 준비에 열을 올리고 있다. "학교생활도 잘하고, 주어진 일도 다 잘 해낼거예요"라고 자신감을 보였다.
-모의고사 국어, 사회에서 1등했다던데. "중학교 때 배운 내용이라서 잘 풀 수 있었다. 엄마한테 자랑하려고 전화드렸는데 안 믿으셨다. 행복은 성적 순이 아니다."
-등교는 어떻게 하나. "혼자 대중교통타고 다니거나 너무 늦으면 택시를 탄다. 요즘은 지하철을 많이 타는데 아무도 못 알아본다. 다들 핸드폰을 하거나 자기 일에 집중하니까 옆에 외계인이 있어도 신경을 안 쓰는 분위기다."
-활동이랑 학교생활 병행하는 게 힘들지 않나. "아침에 일어나는게 제일 힘들다. 가는 길도 힘들다. 그렇지만 학생이니까 열심히 해야한다."
-솔로가수로 Mnet '엠카운트다운'에 올랐다.
"정말 떨렸다. 낯설고 어색한 마음에 떨렸던 것 같다. 팬미팅 첫 느낌보다 살짝 다르게 더 떨린다고 해야하나."
-응원군도 왔나.
"펜타곤 진호, 신원 형이 응원왔다. 새벽 2시 사녹이었는데도 큐브 직원 분들이 총출동했다. 회사에서 예뻐해주신다는 걸 느낀다."
-사랑받는 비결이 뭔가.
"인사를 잘 하고 회사 분들하고 말 한 마디를 더 하려고 한다. 하루에도 세 네번씩 사무실에 간다."
-이진아와의 호흡은 어땠나.
"함께 해서 정말 많은 것을 배웠다. 진아 누나 노래만 듣는 팬이었는데 회사에서 연결해줘서 작곡가겸 프로듀서로 만나게 됐다."
-앨범에서 가장 좋아하는 노래는 뭔가.
"'푸른 별, 하나'가 가장 좋다. 내가 그동안 즐겨 듣던 발라드 장르라서 익숙했다. 타이틀곡 '봄이 오면'도 물론 좋지만 처음 해보는 창법이라 녹음할 때 어려웠다. 진아 누나가 '웃으면서 따뜻한 느낌으로 불러봐'라고 조언해줬다."
-듀엣하고 싶은 가수가 있다면.
"비투비 육성재 형이나 펜타곤 여원 형이랑 해보고 싶다. 회사에서 두 형들이랑 닮았다는 이야기를 많이 들어서 같이 하면 재미있을 것 같다. 여원 형이랑은 음악 이야기를 자주 하는데 좋아하는 스타일이 똑같아서 신기하고 재미있다."
