Kwon Sang-woo returns to the big screen : Since ‘The Accidental Detective’ in 2015, the star has focused on TV

His most recent appearance was on the second season of the KBS drama “Queen of Mystery,” which ran from Feb. 28 to April 19. On the show, he plays the tenacious detective Ha Wan-seung, who works alongside Yoo Seol-ok, played by actor Choi Kang-hee.
Ending with a relatively-low viewership rating of 7.8 percent, this is the first time that the second season of a drama produced by a major terrestrial network was written by the same scriptwriter and featured the original cast.
In the upcoming movie “The Accidental Detective 2: In Action,” directed by Lee Eon-hie, Kwon also plays the role of a detective. This film, a sequel to the 2015 movie “The Accidental Detective” directed by Kim Joung-hoon, is Kwon’s first movie in three years.
In the original, which was seen by roughly 2.6 million people, Kwon plays a wannabe detective who makes a living as a comic book store owner.
The previous film centered on the effort by No Tae-su (Sung Dong-il), a police detective, and Kang Dae-man (Kwon) to catch the culprits behind the three murder cases.
Despite some conflicts, the two successfully catch the perpetrators and the movie ends with the two characters establishing their own private investigation company.
The sequel picks up where the previous film left off. Along with some familiar faces, including actors Seo Young-hee and Lee Il-hwa, who play the wives of the investigative duo, the comedy also features new faces like Lee Kwang-soo and Son Dam-bi. Lee’s character Yeo-chi, a former skilled worker of the Cyber Bureau, joins the duo as they work to solve crimes.
Prior to the movie’s release, Kwon sat with Ilgan Sports, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily, to talk about the movie and his previous work. The following are edited excerpts of the interview.

A. I would say my biggest reason is the people that I am working with. It was really nice to work with such [brilliant] actors.
Who did you enjoy working with the most? Can you pick an actor from each project?
Actors Sung Dong-il from the “Accidental Detective” series and Choi Gang-hee from “Queen of Mystery” are probably who I’ve most enjoyed working with.
Why did you sign on to be a part of the second season of “Queen of Mystery” despite the show’s low ratings?
“Queen of Mystery” didn’t have really high [ratings] despite having a secure fan base, but that didn’t matter that much to me. I continued to shoot scenes for the second season because the actors really trusted each other.
Many people have an impression that you are a capable actor that can turn any movie or drama into a series. What are your thoughts on this?
Um, I think that’s really hard to say at the moment. If “Accidental Detective 2” does well, then I could say that this characterization is true. [Regardless], I really do like that people think of me in such a way.
What kind of work do you want to do in the future?
Let’s see. I would really like to work on a series that leaves an impression on audiences such as Iron Man, so that [my acting] can be remembered. That’s another reason why I like “The Accidental Detective 2: In Action” because we have a [huge] fan base of middle-aged and elderly people.
Were there any major difficulties you faced while filming “The Accidental Detective 2: In Action”?
I was really concerned that I would appear fatter than I am on screen. Currently, I weigh 75 kg (165 lbs) but I once weighed over 80 kg, which was a huge shock. I had to exercise a lot to reach my current weight. Exercising and keeping my body in shape became difficult tasks for me after I got married. Maybe this is due to my age.
What are you working on at the moment?
Well, I’ll soon be shooting scenes for an action movie, so I’m trying to get my body into shape. Since I love to eat, I thought that it would be impossible for me to go on a diet. I’m trying to take a chance though.
It’s been three years since the first “The Accidental Detective” film hit theaters. How has your career changed since then?
Over the past three years, I have been constantly filming dramas and working outside of Korea. Even though I was pretty busy, that was the last film I worked on, so I felt excluded from the film industry.
What meaning do movies have in your life?
Since my childhood, I have really loved watching movies. And because I loved them so much, I decided to become an actor.

'탐정2' 권상우 ”가오있는 영화 아냐…속편 컴백 감개무량”
권상우가 '탐정'에 대한 남다른 애정을 드러냈다.
영화 '탐정: 리턴즈(이언희 감독)' 개봉을 앞두고 있는 권상우는 31일 서울 삼청동의 한 카페에서 진행된 인터뷰에서 두번째 시리즈로 돌아온데 대해 "'리턴즈'를 말하면 전작인 '더 비기닝' 때를 이야기 할 수 밖에 없다"고 운을 뗐다.
권상우는 "무슨 자신감인지 모르겠는데 그 때는 첫날 5만 명이 들었는데도 우리끼리는 '딜 것 같다'는 마음으로 열심히 무대인사도 하고 그랬다. '우리가 만든 재미가 관객들에게 통했으면' 하는 바람이 있었는데 그렇게 돼서 기뻤다"고 전했다.
이어 "결국 손익분기점 넘고 '리턴즈'로 돌아와서 감개무량한 것이 가장 큰 느낌이다. 우리가 사실 가오있는 영화는 아니지 않나. 100억이 넘는 대작도 아니고 그 맛이 있는 영화인 것 같다. 그 부분만 잘 봐주시면 그래도 어느 정도의 장르를 개척할 수 있지 않을까 생각한다.
또 “사실 전작이 애매하게 잘 됐고, 2편이 나올 정도는 아니라는 것을 안다. 첫날 스코어로 하면 100만도 못 넘어야 하는 스코어인데 잘 극복했다. 파이팅이 좋았던 것 같다. 흥행이 전부는 아니겠지만 잘 돼야 또 다른 이야기가 나올 수 있을 것 같다. 흥행에 대한 아주 큰 욕심은 없지만 1편은 뛰어 넘어야 하지 않을까 싶다"고 덧붙였다.

2015년 9월 개봉해 262만 명을 동원하며 흥행에 성공한 '탐정: 더 비기닝(김정훈 감독)'의 후속작으로 돌아온 명콤비 권상우•성동일에 이어 이광수가 합류, 한층 업그레이드 된 웃음과 진화한 범죄 스토리를 선보인다. 6월 13일 개봉한다.
"'추리의 여왕'에 이어 '탐정'까지 속편이 나왔다"는 말에 "첫 번째는 사람이다. 사람이 좋아서 하는 것이다"고 말했다.
권상우는 "'탐정'은 성동일 선배님, '추리의 여왕'은 최강희 씨가 좋아서 계속 하게되고 하고 싶다. 사람에 대한 믿음이 있다. 사실 '추리의 여왕'도 고정 팬은 있지만 초대박은 아니었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 어쨌든 두번째 시리즈까지 갈 수 있었던 것은 배우들끼리의 신뢰감이라 생각한다"고 전했다.
이어 "내가 20대 때였으면 이런 생각을 할지 모르겠지만 지금의 철든 마음으로는 '하나의 작품으로 고정 팬을 쭉 갖고 가는 것도 좋은 것 같다'는 마음이다. 물론 '너무 획일화 돼 보이는 것 아닐까' 그런 고민도 있고 딜레마가 있는 것도 사실이다. 새로운 모습도 보여줘야 하니까"라고 털어놨다.
하지만 "우리나라 배우 중에서는 시리즈물화 시킨 최고의 배우가 아니냐"는 말에는 "솔직히 그것도 애매하다. 그렇지 않아요?"라며 손사레를 치더니 "'탐정'이 잘 되면 '그래요!'라고 하 수 있을 것 같은데 지금은 애매하다. 영화적으로 그런 타이틀이 있으면 좋기는 할 것 같다"고 밝혔다.
또 "'아이언 맨'처럼 작품과 캐릭터로 기억될 수 있는 시리즈면 더 좋을 것 같기도 하다. '탐정' 역시 중•장년층이 돼 가면서 쭉 갈 수 있는 영화 한 편으로는 좋은 것 같다"고 덧붙였다.

'원조 몸짱배우'로 권상우가 몸매 관리에 열중하고 있다고 밝혔다.

권상우는 "한번은 과식을 하고 몸무게 쟀더니 몸무게 앞자리가 '8'을 찍었더라. 그 때 솔직히 좀 충격을 받아 다시 운동을 시작했다. 지금은 많이 뺐다. 75kg이다"고 밝혔다.
인터뷰 전 사진촬영을 진행한 권상우는 "사진 살찌게 안 나왔죠? 실물보다 살찌게 나오더라"며 나름의 고민을 토로하더니 "아무래도 결혼을 한 이후에는 계속 찌고 있다. 나이가 들어 예전처럼 관리를 해도 잘 안 되더라"고 전했다.
또 "하반기에 액션 영화를 준비 중이라 그 때를 위해 식단조절까지 하면서 관리를 해 보려고 한다. 먹는 것을 너무 좋아해 원래 식단조절은 절대 못 했는데 도전해 볼까 생각 중이다"고 덧붙였다.

현재 촬영 중인 '두번 할까요?(가제)', 하반기 준비 중인 '귀수', 그리고 그 이후 찍는 또 한편의 차기작까지 영화만 네 편을 줄줄이 선보이게 된다고 언급했다.
권상우는 "'탐정: 더 비기닝' 이후 3년만에 돌아왔는데, 그동안 드라마도 찍고 해외 활동도 하다 보니까 영화계에서 소외받는 느낌이 있었다. 외국에 있으니까 못 받는 책 많고, 텀이 길어지니까 뭔가 끊기는 느낌이 들더라"고 말했다.
이어 "영화를 좋아하고, 영화가 좋아서 배우가 하고 싶었고, 영화로 첫 데뷔를 했으니까 개인적으로 스크린을 고향이라고 생각한다"며 "'죽이 되든 밥이 되든 좋은 작품 만나 계속 해보자'는 마음우로 쉼없이 주루룩 열심히 영화 행보를 이어 나갈 생각이다"고 밝혔다.
