Hyundai Glovis to establish R&D team for future logistics

Hyundai Glovis, the logistics arm of Hyundai Motor Group, said on Wednesday it will establish an organization dedicated to the research and development of future logistics technologies.

The organization will start with 30 logistics experts and consultants from within the company. The Hyundai affiliate said it aims to recruit new talent to expand the body to a team of 80 researchers by 2020.

The organization will first focus on finding ways to automate the logistics process using new technologies. The company said it is considering using robots and self-driving trucks, and will also work on developing a demand prediction system for the shipping market.

The new research team will also craft long-term strategies for new mobility services, like car sharing.

The company’s decision is a response to rapid disruptions to the logistics business environment due to digital technologies, a Hyundai Glovis spokesperson said.
