K League to add streaming site for Vietnamese fans

Korea’s pro football league said Friday it will provide an online streaming service on some K League 1 matches this season to meet the high demand from Vietnamese fans.

The league office said the K League 1 match between Incheon United and Gyeongnam FC on Saturday can be watched live on its official website.

Since May 2018, the K League has been streaming one match per week on its website, a service known as “Worldwide Live,” but for this season, it plans to show more Incheon matches due to increasing demand from Vietnamese fans.

Incheon signed Vietnamese star forward Nguyen Cong Phuong on loan for this season. But since K League matches are not broadcast in Vietnam, fans there went to illegal streaming websites to see Incheon’s opening match last week.

According to the league, 26,000 Vietnamese fans watched Incheon’s season opener against Jeju United last week via illegal streaming services.

To meet the rising demand from Vietnamese fans, the league said it will enhance its live streaming service.

“Our Worldwide Live service will be a good way to satisfy the increasing demand for K League 1 matches from Vietnamese fans,” the league said. “We’ll keep looking for ways to help Vietnamese fans to watch K League 1 matches."
