Gangwon FC defeated the Pohang Steelers 5-4 in a thrilling come-from-behind victory at Chuncheon Songam Leports Town in Gangwon on Sunday.

Pohang got off to a quick start, with Wanderson Carvalho de Oliveira scoring two goals during the first half of the match.

Lee Seok-hyun extended Pohang’s lead to three in the 54th minute and Wanderson scored another to complete his hat trick and bring Pohang’s lead to 4-0. With Pohang holding such a big lead, it seemed as if Gangwon had no chance at winning the match.

In the 71st minute, Gangwon finally broke their silence from Cho Jae-wan’s goal, before Valentinos Sielis added another in the 79th minute. But after failing to score additional goals in the regulated time of 90 minutes, it seemed impossible for Gangwon to walk away with a win.

But a six-minute stoppage time changed everything. Cho scored two more goals to complete his hat trick in the second and the fourth minute of stoppage time to quickly tie the match at 4-4.

Right before the whistle, Jung Jo-gook scored the winner in the 96th minute to help Gangwon to the biggest come-from-behind victory in K League 1 history.

It was also Jung’s first goal of the season.

“It was a win that had a big impact,” Jung said. “It’s very positive. It could have been a situation where our team could have fallen apart but our players didn’t give up. It’s very positive that we’ve made our way up as a team. Also, this kind of win can give impact us strongly as a team.”

Not only was this the biggest come-from-behind victory in K League 1 history, the match also caught a lot of football fans’ attention as goalkeeper Lee Gwang-yeon, who left quite an impression during the recent FIFA U-20 World Cup, finally made his K League 1 debut.

Gangwon’s victory was also impressive enough to make foreign media headlines.

GiveMeSport, a sports media outlet, wrote about the match and said, “Korean side Gangwon may have produced the most ridiculous comeback in football history. It won’t be broadcast throughout the world, but the K League side actually came from 4-0 down to beat Pohang Steelers 5-4.”

SPORTbible, a sports media outlet in the United Kingdom, wrote about Gangwon with the headline, “K-League Side Gangwon FC Produce The Greatest Comeback Of All Time.”

With the win, Gangwon is now ranked fifth with seven wins, three draws and seven losses, totaling 24 points, while Pohang is ranked seventh with six wins, two draws and seven losses, totaling 20 points.

Gangwon will continue its season with another K League 1 regular season match against Incheon United on Sunday at Incheon Football Stadium at 7 p.m.
