[Sponsored Report] LG Display is ready for the OLED revolution
The company will expand its OLED range, strengthen the fundamental business capabilities of its small- and medium-sized P-OLED (plastic OLED) business, and develop new markets of differentiated commercial and automotive products.
Unlike liquid crystal display (LCD) screens, OLED offers the most complete black with a perfect contrast ratio. It is recognized as the best display in terms of overall image quality due to accurate color representation and has a response speed that is 1,000 times faster compared to that of LCD.
OLED is a self-luminous display that emits light by itself. As it doesn’t need a backlight, panels can be incredibly thin, making it ideal for transparent, flexible and bendable products.
Meanwhile, QD-LCD, known as QLED, is a technology that uses quantum dot technology on top of LCD panels. Just like LCD, it obtains light through a backlight.
“OLED is a display that is totally different from that of QLED,” said Kang In-byeong, chief technology officer of LG Display. “OLED is an innovative form factor that adapts to the lifestyle of the fourth industrial revolution.”
Kang added that OLED represents the highest definition through its infinite contrast ratio, wide-viewing angle and rich and accurate color representation, because it has no backlight. He emphasized that OLED can integrate sound and sensors, and transform itself to flexible, rollable and foldable designs.
According to market research IHS Markit, four million OLED TVs are expected to be sold in 2019, eight million in 2020 and 10 million in 2021. The surge in OLED TV demand is favorable for LG Display, which has exclusively supplied OLED TV panels.
LG Display is currently manufacturing various ultra-high-resolution UHD OLED panels with a size of 55, 65 and 77 inches. When construction of 8.5 G-level Guangzhou OLED plants is completed in the end of 2019, a production capacity of 70,000 units per month can be increased to 130,000 units per month.
Assuming that one 55-inch UHD OLED panel can be made as a single sheet, 10 million 55-inch UHD OLED panels can be produced per year. Therefore, LG Display is expected to secure economies of scale and enhance cost competitiveness and operating efficiency.
LG Display also plans to expand sale areas and strengthen collaboration with strategic customers to boost its sales.
This year, the company will expand television resolutions from 4K to 8K and enhance performance in luminance as well as response speed.
The company will also expand its market by producing differentiated products that emulate wallpaper, crystal sound OLED, rollable panels and transparent displays.
At the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show, the company unveiled a 65-inch 8K OLED panel with over 33 million pixels. This product is advantageous given its wide-viewing angles with no distortion or decrease in brightness, as well as detailed and precise representation.
LG Display also showcased a 65-inch UHD Crystal Motion OLED, which is equipped with the world’s fastest motion-picture response time.
“This year, LG Display will focus on developing OLED to accelerate its growth, while focusing on the commercial and automotive businesses, and nurturing accounts for more than 50 percent of total sales by 2020,” said Han Sang-beom, LG Display vice chairman. “We will successfully develop OLED so that LG Display and Korea can lead the global display market.”
