Samsung Electronics breaks the 0.7 micrometer barrier

New image sensors from Samsung Electronics have the smallest pixels in the world, measuring in at 0.7 micrometers.

Introduced Tuesday, the Isocell Slim GH1 have 43.7 megapixels, each 0.7 micrometers in width and length.

“Samsung has been stepping up in pixel technology innovation,” said Yongin Park, executive vice president of the sensor business at Samsung Electronics.

Starting from the 1.0-micrometer image sensor in 2015, Samsung has gradually scrunched pixel sizes down over the years to release a 0.8 micrometer product last year.

“We are pleased to deliver yet another breakthrough.”

The trouble with smaller pixel sizes is that it makes it harder for each pixel to absorb sufficient light. Samsung says it overcame this problem using Tetracell technology, which merges pixels to allow higher light sensitivity.
