According to the police, six vehicles rear-ended each other in a chain collision after an initial vehicle lost control near the Sinpyeong interchange on the Jayuro II Highway at around 8:30 a.m.
The injured person was taken to a nearby hospital.
Local authorities believe the main cause of the accident was black ice, a phenomenon in which ice forms on the surface of a road but looks black, making it difficult for drivers to see.
The police also said no more injuries were reported as the accident occurred when the cars were moving at a crawl due to the icy conditions.
The city of Goyang said it sprayed calcium chloride at the scene in order to prevent any reoccurrences.
The accident occurred about a week after two deadly pileups took place on the Sangju-Yeongcheon highway early morning on Dec. 14. The pileups caused seven deaths and 32 injuries.
After the deadly pileups, public agencies announced they would carry out an all-out investigation to check the highways that were designated by the government to be areas vulnerable to black ice and check if any other areas across the country were missing from the list.
According to the data provided by the Road Traffic Authority, about 145 people were killed and 8,500 people were injured due to traffic accidents caused by black ice over the past four years.
