English songs by Korean singers prove to be hits: Growing number of artists are recording music that appeals to fans worldwide

Baek Ye-rin, former member of the JYP-produced duo 15&, released “Square,” a song sung entirely in English, in early December. It was the most listened song on the charts of local music streaming services including Genie and Melon for more than week.
Songs by pop stars from around the world - like “2002” by Anne-Marie - have been at the top of the charts for weeks before, but it was a rarity to see a song sung in English by a Korean artist pull off the same feat.
Baek’s “Every letter I sent you” (2019) is the first album Baek released since she debuted as a solo artist after her departure from 15& in September. Baek, 22, had been a longtime member of JYP Entertainment since she was 10.
The album consists entirely of English songs, except one, written by Baek. The lyrics are made from scribbles and thoughts that Baek had collected when she was 19, according to her independent label Blue Vinyl.
Baek, who debuted in 2012 as part of a duo along with Park Ji-min, had been interested in English songs for a while, especially since she received vocal and dance training in the United States when she was younger.
On her 2015 album “Frank,” Baek also included a song in English, titled “As I am.”
Although she is said to have shown interest in writing and singing more songs in English, she was discouraged from doing so, for lack of public interest.
This changed when Baek wrote “Square” in 2017 and sung it during a music festival in Seoul. Video footage of her performance went viral with the views quickly surpassing 10 million.
Baek is not alone in her desire to produce more songs in English.
Kim Ye-rim, known by her stage name Lim Kim, released an album in October this year, “Generasian,” which was also entirely made up of English songs except for one.
Kim debuted in 2011 through the audition program “Superstar K” and performed as a member of duo group Togeworl under Mystic Entertainment but departed from the duo in 2013 and left the agency in 2016.
“When you’re part of an organization, it is difficult to make decisions independently regarding the identity of your songs and the ideals you pursue as an artist,” Kim said in an interview she posted on her YouTube channel in July this year. “I did some hard thinking and decided the general idea of what kind of ideals I wanted to put out there as an artist and went with it.”
Kim attended middle and high school in the United States.
“I hope that [by producing songs in English], people around the world will be able to see what kinds of thoughts and values an Asian female artist carries today,” she said during the interview conducted in Korean.
From the market perspective, there is also increasing demand for English songs as more Korean artists perform abroad.
Singer Eric Nam released his album “Before We Begin” in November 2019, which was also made up entirely of English songs.
“Some told me that an album made entirely of English songs would not do well,” Nam told the JoongAng Ilbo recently. “But I felt there was more demand for it as I went on a world tour. Additionally, we live in a world of streaming music, which means people are more open to music from outside of their own countries.”
For instance, the music video for the Spanish-language song “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi has been viewed by more than 6.5 billion people on YouTube.
Nam, who was born in the United States and has an undergraduate degree in international relations from Boston College, was once criticized for his accent and non-native pronunciation of Korean words.
“I had to think so much about my pronunciations while I sang. It felt like I was solving math problems, not singing,” Nam said. “I finally feel like I am myself.”
Experts see a greater likelihood for artists to produce songs in English in the future.
“When we analyzed the YouTube data about the viewing rates of songs by 76 K-pop artists, we saw that only 10.1 percent of them were users in Korea,” said Kim Hong-ki, CEO of Space Oddity, a music and entertainment start-up based in western Seoul. “The rest were from abroad. That will probably call for more songs written and sung in English by Korean artists.”
“We have more K-pop groups today consisting of members from abroad like NCT or Z-Girls and Z-Boys,” said Lee Gyu-tag, professor of pop music and media studies at George Mason University Korea in Incheon.
“They are breaking stereotypes regarding K-pop music, in that the songs don’t have to be in Korean and that they don’t have to be sung by Koreans all the time. As more of these international K-pop groups do well, it will only add positive energy to the current trends set by K-pop.”

"대중성 부족하다" 편견 깨고 음악차트 1위 차지한 이노래
‘대중가요’의 범주는 어디까지일까. 여성 듀오 피프틴앤드(15&) 출신 가수 백예린이 지난 10일 발표한 ‘스퀘어(Squareㆍ2017)’가 일주일 넘게 음원차트 정상을 차지하면서 생겨난 질문이다. 한국 가수가 발표한 영어 가사 곡이 처음으로 음원차트 1위에 오른 데 이어 장기 흥행을 이어가는 것은 새로운 사건이기 때문이다. 영국 가수 앤 마리가 지난해 발표한 ‘2002’가 올해 국내 연간 차트 정상을 차지할 것이 확실해진 가운데 가요와 팝의 경계가 빠르게 허물어지고 있다.
‘스퀘어’가 수록된 ‘에브리 레터 아이 센트 유(Every letter I sent you.)’는 백예린이 지난 9월 JYP엔터테인먼트와 계약 종료 후 처음 선보인 정규 앨범이다. 10살 때부터 12년간 몸담은 JYP를 떠난 그가 석 달 만에 독립 레이블 블루바이닐을 설립하고 새 앨범을 발표할 수 있었던 것은 꾸준히 자작곡을 만들어온 덕분이다. 수록곡 18곡 중 17곡이 영어 곡으로 “19살부터 23살까지 내 생각과 고민, 추억들이 담겨있다”고 밝혔다.
미국에서 2년간 보컬과 댄스 트레이닝을 받은 백예린은 영어 곡에 대한 애착을 여러 차례 밝혀 왔다. 2015년 첫 솔로 앨범 ‘프랭크(FRANK)’에서도 ‘애즈 아이 엠(As I am)’ 등 영어 곡을 선보인 그는 “발음에 따라 발성이 달라지는 게 흥미롭고 다양한 해석이 가능하다”고 밝혔다. 영어 곡은 “대중성이 부족하다”는 회사의 반대에 부딪혀 주로 페스티벌 무대에서 미발표곡 상태로 불러왔지만 대중의 반응은 폭발적이었다. 2017년 첫선을 보인 ‘스퀘어’ 무대를 팬들이 찍어서 올린 각종 라이브 영상 조회 수는 1000만회를 훌쩍 넘겼고, 정식 발매 요청이 쇄도할 만큼 입소문이 난 상태였다.
‘슈퍼스타 K 3’(2011)의 혼성듀오 투개월 출신인 김예림도 비슷한 과정을 거쳤다. 2016년 미스틱스토리와 결별 후 3년간 절치부심한 그는 지난 5월 활동명을 림킴으로 변경하고 영어 곡 ‘살기(SAL-KI)’를 선보였다. 10월 발표한 첫 미니앨범 ‘제너레아시안(GENERASIAN)’ 역시 ‘민족요’ 1곡울 제외하면 5곡 모두 영어다. ‘옐로(YELLOW)’ ‘디지털 칸(DIGITAL KHAN)’ 등 제목부터 ‘동양 여성’으로서 정체성이 전면에 드러난다. 서구 오리엔탈리즘이 가진 동양 여성에 대한 환상을 깨고 쿵후를 접목한 안무에 맞춰 “이것이 지금 아시아에서 일어나는 현상”이라고 외치는 림킴의 모습은 낯설지만 통쾌하다.
림킴은 자신의 유튜브 채널을 통해 “(소속사 안에서는) 자신의 인생을 살기가 어려웠다”고 밝혔다. 스스로 세울 수 있는 목표가 거의 없는 상황에서 다른 사람이 정해주는 내가 아닌 주체적인 내가 되고 싶었다는 것. 미국에서 중고등학교를 다닌 그가 영어로 작업하게 된 이유 또한 “동양 여성이 어떤 이야기를 하는지 한국인뿐만 아니라 전 세계 사람들이 듣길 바라는” 마음에서다. 청순함이 돋보였던 오디션 스타 시절과는 180도 달라진 모습이다.
이러한 변신은 산업적으로도 맞아떨어졌다. 전 세계적으로 K팝에 대한 관심이 높아지면서 한국 가수들의 해외 활동도 덩달아 늘어났기 때문이다. ‘스타오디션-위대한 탄생 2’(2011) 출신인 에릭남은 지난달 첫 영어 앨범 ‘비포 위 비긴(Before We Begin)을 발표한 소감에 대해 “이제야 트라우마에서 좀 벗어난 느낌”이라고 밝혔다. 미국에서 태어나 끊임없이 한국어 발음이 안 좋다거나 너무 팝스럽다는 지적을 받아온 그로서는 마음의 짐을 내려놓게 된 셈이다.
오랫동안 영어 앨범을 준비해온 그는 “처음엔 반대 의견도 많았지만 월드투어를 하면서 필요성을 더 느끼게 됐다”며 “스트리밍 시대로 넘어오면서 새로운 음악을 경험하는 것에 대해 더 관대해진 것 같다”고 말했다. 스페인어로 된 루이스 폰시의 ‘데스파시토’가 유튜브 조회 수 65억 회를 돌파하고, 방탄소년단의 한국어 앨범 ‘맵 오브 더 솔: 페르소나’ 등이 미국 빌보드 앨범차트에서 3연속 정상을 차지하는 상황에서 언어의 경계가 무의미해졌단 얘기다.
인디신에서도 영어로 중심을 옮겨가고 있는 혁오나 아예 영어 곡만 발표하고 있는 아도이 등 새로운 움직임이 이어지고 있다. “젊은 층은 국적과 관계없이 팝송을 많이 듣기 때문에 낯설어하지 않는다”는 것이 이들의 공통적인 설명이다. 음악 스타트업 스페이스오디티 김홍기 대표는 “팬덤 연구소 블립을 설립해 K팝 76개 팀의 유튜브 조회 수를 분석해본 결과 한국의 비중은 10.1%밖에 되지 않았다. 완벽하게 글로벌 시장을 대상으로 하는 음악이 된 것”이라며 “제목과 후렴구에 주로 사용되던 영어의 비중은 앞으로도 더 확대될 것”이라고 밝혔다.
K팝을 둘러싼 경계가 하나씩 사라지면서 지형도 자체가 변하고 있다는 분석도 나온다. 한국 조지메이슨대 이규탁 교수는 “NCT 같은 다국적 그룹은 물론 지걸즈ㆍ지보이즈처럼 한국 멤버가 없는 K팝 그룹도 꾸준히 나오면서 ‘한국 노래’라고 하면 한국 가수가 부르거나 한국어로 되어야 한다는 고정관념 자체가 사라지고 있다”고 밝혔다. 이어 “아시아 중에서도 동아시아 문화에 주목도가 높아지고 있는 상황에서 해당 정체성을 앞세운 가수들의 활약이 이어진다면 K팝의 저변도 더욱 넓어질 것”이라고 덧붙였다.
