Weekend box-office ticket sales plummet to record low

The coronavirus outbreak has caused weekend box-office numbers to plunge to a record low, selling below 100,000 tickets nationwide.

According to data from Korean Film Council, total ticket sales over this weekend fell to about 80,000, even lower than that of last weekend, which had fallen to 116,000.

It’s the first time weekend box-office sales have fallen below 100,000 since the Korean Film Council started collecting daily box-office data in 2004.

Chinese martial arts film “Ip Man 4: The Finale” was in the top spot, with an estimated 16,000 ticket sales. “1917” followed with 11,000 tickets sold, followed by third-place “Judy,” which sold 8,500.

No local films made it to the top five spots, as there were no new films released.
