The ceremony was broadcast live online due to Covid-19 precautions.

Jang, who was appointed on Dec. 10 to a four-year term starting on Feb. 1, has been a professor at Soongsil since 1995. He was previously the university's executive vice president for academic affairs and dean of the graduate school of business administration.

Jang also served as chair of the Korean government's Financial Reform Committee and chair of the Advisory Committee for Korea's Financial Development.

He holds a master's degree in finance from Seoul National University and a Ph.D. in finance from the University of Texas in Austin.

In his inaugural remarks, Jang pledged, "I will pour my entire body and soul into fostering a greater and stronger Soongsil University."

He also promised, "I will develop Soongsil according to its identity as a Christian university so it progresses from being the first to being the best."

Soongsil University was founded in Pyongyang in 1897 as a private Christian school by the American missionary William M. Baird. The school relocated to Seoul after the Korean War and attained university status in 1971.
