The first rule of the auto market is that a car depreciates instantly when you drive it off the lot. In Korea, the rule no longer applies. Cars are appreciating after being purchased, and their value is holding.

자동차 시장의 첫 번째 원칙은 차가 (출고돼서) 주차장에서 떠난 직후부터 가격이 떨어진다는 것이다. 한국에서 이 원칙은 더 이상 적용될 수 없다. 차는 구입 후에도 가격이 오르고 가치는 유지된다.

기아의 승용차 K8 신차 가격은 4600만원이다. 주행기록계에서 1000킬로미터를 달린 중고차 K8은 최근 4800만원에 거래됐다.

Kia's K8 is just one of many models in which delivery has been delayed due a shortage of auto semiconductors. Kia’s Hwaseong plant, which produces the K8, slashed production in March by suspending weekend shifts. Hyundai Motor's Ulsan and Asan plants also partially shut in May and June in order to cope with chip shortages. Those who place orders for the new K8 have to wait at least four months, according to Kia.

기아의 K8은 차량용 반도체 부족 때문에 인도가 늦어지고 있는 많은 모델 중 하나다. K8을 제조하는 기아의 화성 공장은 주말 교대근무를 중단하면서 지난 3월 생산량이 크게 줄었다. 현대차 울산과 아산 공장 역시 지난 5월과 6월 반도체 부족으로 인해 가동을 부분 중단했다. 기아에 따르면 K8 신차를 주문한 사람들은 최소 4개월을 기다려야 한다.

Delays in car production and longer delivery times are leading customers to look at the used car market, long shunned in Korea due to the impression that dealers rip off customers by selling damaged cars at high prices.

자동차 생산 지연과 자동차 인도 기간 연장으로 인해 고객들은 중고차 시장에 눈을 돌리게 됐다. 한국에서 중고차 시장은 딜러들이 하자 있는 차량을 높은 가격에 속여서 판다는 인식 때문에 기피 대상이었다.

That’s all changed. The number of newly registered secondhand cars was up 20.1 percent this year through May on year to 1.6 million units, according to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. The surge in demand and the lack of supply are pushing up the prices of popular secondhand cars.

하지만 상황은 바뀌었다. 국토부에 따르면 올해 5월까지 새로 등록된 중고차의 수는 160만대로 지난해에 비해 20.1%가 늘었다. 수요 급증과 공급 부족으로 인기 중고차의 가격은 높아지고 있다.

The average market price of used 2020 Kia Sorento SUVs is 39.2 million won as of June 23, according to Encar. The sticker price of the same model is 38.2 million won.

엔카에 따르면 2020년식 기아 소렌토 SUV는 6월 23일 현재 평균 3920만원이다. 이 모델의 원래 가격은 3820만원이었다.

Secondhand Kia 2020 Carnival minivans are being traded at 41.6 million won on Encar, higher than the model’s sticker price of 39.9 million won.

2020년 기아의 카니발 미니밴 중고차는 엔카에서 4160만원에 거래되고 있다. 이 모델의 원래 가격 3990만원보다 높다.

“Prices of secondhand cars in April and May have inched up or maintained their levels despite the fact that those months are slow seasons for used car trades,” said a spokesperson from Encar.

엔카 대변인은 “지난 4월과 5월 중고차 가격은 조금 올랐거나 비슷한 수준을 유지했다. 원래 그 기간 동안은 중고차 거래가 뜸한 편인데 말이다”라고 말했다.

“The peak season starts from June, and when the new car delays are added, the rising trend in secondhand car prices is likely to continue for a while longer.”

peak season: 성수기

그는 “성수기는 6월부터 시작되는데, 신차 인도까지 늦어지면서 중고차 가격은 한동안 상승 추세가 계속될 것으로 보인다”고 말했다.

AJ Sellcar said the average market price of the site’s top 10 models rose by 6.1 percent in May compared to the previous month. The turnover rate of used cars is also picking up pace, according to Encar.

AJ셀카는 지난 5월 톱 10 모델의 평균 가격이 전달에 비해 6.1% 상승했다고 말했다. 엔카에 따르면 중고차가 팔리는데 걸리는 시간인 회전율도 빨라지고 있다.

The company said that 2020 and 2021 Hyundai Motor Palisade SUVs, the brand's most popular SUV model, moved on average in 18.6 days in May compared to 24.9 days the previous month.

엔카에 따르면 현대차의 최고 인기 SUV 모델인 팰리세이드 2020년과 2021년식 차량은 지난 4월의 경우 평균 24.9일 만에 판매됐는데, 5월에는 평균 18.6일 만에 팔렸다.

기아 SUV 소렌토의 2020년과 2021년식 모델은 지난 4월엔 17.3일만에 팔렸지만, 5월에는 10.5일 만에 판매됐다.
