GS E&C gets into modular green hydrogen plant biz

GS Engineering & Construction will export components of plants to produce green hydrogen, the first local construction company to do so.

The company announced Monday it signed a memorandum of understanding with California-based energy company SG H2 Lancaster LLC to design, build and export components for a green hydrogen plant to be built in California.

Some companies have been choosing to order modular plants — pre-assembled facilities and components — and later assemble them at a construction site. This allows companies to cut costs, avoid possible delays due to external factors such as weather and minimize site work and construction time.

When the California plant is finished, it will be capable of producing 11 tons of green hydrogen every day.

Green hydrogen is considered the ultimate eco-friendly energy source. It uses renewable energy such as solar and wind power and doesn't emit any carbon while being produced.

Following the deal, the company hopes to build similar modular plants for SG H2 Energy in Europe and North America and for a renewable energy plant that will break ground in Ulsan this year.
