The rapid growth of EVs has had a significant impact on the tire market as well.
Global tire manufacturers are jumping into the race to develop EV-only tires to hold related markets.
Hankook Tire and Technology, a leading company in the global tire industry, announced on March 15 that it will launch a new tire brand ‘iON’ for EVs in the European market from May, introducing the world’s first full line of tires specifically for EVs.
Even before EVs were commercialized, Hankook Tire promptly responded to market changes by establishing a customized technology development strategy for each segment of EVs.
The company earned recognition by supplying original equipment tires for pure EVs including Porsche Taycan, Audi e-tron and Volkswagen ID.4.
In addition, Volkswagen’s ID.4 USA Tour project, which used tires exclusively for EVs of Hankook Tire, recorded the longest mileage traveled consecutively by a single country’s EV, setting a new Guinness World Record.
The newly released EV tire brand iON plans to unveil a total of six tire products ranging from 18 inches to 22 inches for both sedans and SUVs.
All six products will be available in the domestic market in August.
Hankook Tire explained iON is a product that was researched and developed targeting high-performance premium EVs from the planning stage and will represent a culmination of innovative technology of tires for EVs.
It is characterized by embodying the perfect driving performance of high-powered EVs by utilizing Hankook Evolution Technology, which overcomes trade-off performance that reduces other aspects when certain performances are raised.
Moreover, iON provides EV drivers with the optimal environment as it uses ‘Hankook Sound Absorber’ technology that blocks the noise of a specific frequency generated by driving.
In terms of durability, the load-bearing capacity of EVs has certainly improved by applying EV Contour Technology.
It also has excellent handling performance with fewer wheel slip phenomena thanks to the implementation of 3D Sipe Technology that can control deformation inside tread blocks.
iON contributes to mileage improvement by adapting high functional polymers, green environment materials, as well as evolution compound with high silica content.
In addition, the company will prove its premium brand value by working as a One-Make official tire supplier and technical partner at an ABB FIA Formula E World Championship — the world’s best EV racing competition — from the 2022/23 season with the introduction of the Gen3 race car.
Hankook Tire plans to provide the best driving environment for EV drivers with industry-leading technology in the ever-expanding electric vehicle market.
