Jeju International Airport received its first international flight in over two years on Friday and a duty-free branch was reopened.

Jeju Air flew from Bangkok to Jeju Island on Friday, bringing 178 passengers to the island.

The flight is the first international flight landing at Jeju International Airport since April 6, 2020. The government suspended visa waivers for foreign nationals in February 2020 and suspended international flights to local airports except those to Incheon, Gimhae and Daegu since April the same year.

Starting June 1, the government lifted the international flight restriction and reintroduced the 30-day visa-free entry for foreigners — except those from 24 countries, including Iran, Sudan and Syria — coming to Jeju Island.

Jeju Air will fly Jeju-Bangkok on June 6, but it won't operate regular flights to and from Bangkok yet. It plans to monitor the Covid-19 situation and offer more international flights in the future.

Shilla Duty Free reopened its duty-free at the airport on Thursday for the first time in two years and two months, preparing for the tourists. The branch had been temporarily shut due to the pandemic bringing fewer international travelers.

The airport branch opened at 7 p.m. Thursday and had its first full opening day on Friday.

The company said the duty-free branch will only open three days a week in June. The branch will open on days when international flights arrive at the airport, although it will open more frequently in the future.

More international flights are expected at Jeju International Airport.

Scoot, a Singaporean carrier, will fly passengers between Jeju Island and Changi International Airport, Singapore starting June 15. The carrier will regularly fly the route three times a week, on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.
