LG Electronics and KT on Wednesday agreed to co-develop robot service businesses.

Through the memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed that day, the companies plan to look for new business opportunities in the robot manufacturing and service sectors and set up a cooperation system to develop next-generation robots. They also hope to establish a cooperation platform to strengthen Korea’s robotics industry and collaborate on government projects in the future.

LG Electronics will offer its robot manufacturing technology, while KT will take charge of robot service operations.

LG Electronics has been running test operations of its CLOi robots in various locations for multiple purposes, starting with the test run of its guide robots at Incheon International Airport in 2017.

The electronics maker has seven types of robots in its CLOi robot product lineup, including ServeBot for serving and CarryBot for logistics.

The electronics maker in June signed an MOU with CJ Logistics to supply automated carrier robots to its warehouse and establish a logistics robot system.

KT will support LG’s CLOi robot products obtain a larger customer reach and work together with the company to co-develop new robots.

“I hope more customers will be able to experience LG Electronics’ customized robot solutions fitted for various purposes through this collaboration,” said Jang Ik-hwan, LG Electronics’ executive vice president of the corporate IT service business.

“I expect the service robots will be more approachable in our customers’ everyday life and Korea’s robotics industry will take a leap forward through the collaboration,” said Song Jae-ho, KT’s vice president of artificial intelligence and digital transformation division.

The signing ceremony was held on Wednesday at LG Science Park in Gangseo District, western Seoul.
