The government will spend 225 billion won ($168 million) to construct underground rainwater storage facilities in Seoul.

The Ministry of Environment said Tuesday it will push forward with measures such as constructing facilities to store large amounts of water near Gwanghwamun in central Seoul and Gangnam Station in southern Seoul, to prevent a recurrence of the flooding seen earlier this month due to heavy rains.

An underground spillway will also be constructed to quickly release water from streams, such as Dorimcheon and Daebangcheon, to the Han River.

The ministry will also create a flood forecasting system using artificial intelligence.

"Infrastructure, such as underground rainwater tunnels in cities, should be built as unprecedented heavy rain could occur at any time due to climate change," said President Yoon Seok-yeol, during a visit to Sinwol Rainwater Storage Facility in Yangcheon District, southwestern Seoul on Tuesday.
