Mirae Asset Securities and the Industrial Bank of Korea signed a memorandum of understanding on Sept. 14 to work together to seek future business strategies. The two companies will cooperate on technological innovations to accelerate digital payments and research for convenient financial transactions.

CEOs Choi Hyun Man and Yoon Jong-won, representatives of Mirae Asset Securities and IBK respectively, attended the agreement ceremony to discuss procedures and directions for the partnership. The two arrived at a consensus to fully utilize each company’s assets and potential to foster not only practical purchasing methods for small business owners and buyers, but also products that can provide new economic experiences for customers.

Mirae Asset Security plans to install its dominant wireless purchasing technology Mirae Asset PAY within IBK’s electronic payment system, BOX POS.

The initiative behind this deal comes from Mirae Asset’s efforts to enhance the utility of purchasing practices. It also enhances accessibility for customers, as regional barriers will not hinder this particular online payment service. Mirae Asset Securities is also planning to make investments in cross border e-commerce services to continuously provide a range of options for small business owners.

The company is also working with WeChat’s mini program payment, which allows users to buy goods or services in mini programs created within the platform.

Mirae Asset Securities has already used NFC technology in Mirae Asset PAY and it has been applied to iPhone simple payments since October last year. The service was given payment gateway permission, the first for a securities company. It has been used as a simple international payment method in WeChat Pay after the company signed an MOU with Tencent. Mirae Asset hopes to increase the number of retailers that provide options for Mirae Asset Pay and WeChat Pay in cooperation with IBK.

“IBK is playing a leading role in the recovery of small firms and its owners,” said Mirae Asset Securities head Choi Hyun-man. “This agreement will accelerate the assistance given to such people as well as enhance their transactional experiences. Moreover, Mirae Asset Securities hopes to offer new investment opportunities by combining the two company’s accumulated wisdom to generate innovative digital businesses.”
