Posco CEO named president of World Steel Association

Posco CEO Choi Jeong-woo was named the 44th president of the World Steel Association on Tuesday at the association's general meeting held in Brussels, the company said Wednesday.

Choi will be representing the association for a year, along with the association's two vice presidents: Sajjan Jindal, CEO of Jindal Steel Works Limited based in India, and Leon Tapalian, CEO of U.S.-based Nucor.

"Steel will be at the core of environmentally friendly materials in the future," Choi said.

"Every steel company should come together to commercialize hydrogen reduction technology and make efforts to solve imminent issues, such as carbon-neutrality and ESG initiatives."

Choi will be the fourth Posco CEO to serve as the president of the association.

Posco was also awarded with “Innovation of the Year” and “Excellence in Sustainability” at the Steelie Awards on Monday, which was hosted by the World Steel Association.

The company won the innovation category for using alternating currents to remove pollutants on stainless steel products and won the sustainability category for its efforts to use shell waste during the sintering process.

The company's Smart Safety Ball, which detects toxic gases such as carbon monoxide, was recognized as part of the Safety and Health Excellence Recognition program.

The Steelie Awards, which began in 2010, recognizes World Steel Association member companies in six different categories every year, including communication programs, low-carbon steel production and life cycle assessment.
