Korea midfielder Jeong Woo-yeong scored the opening goal in SC Freiburg’s 2-0 win over Koln on Sunday as the German club took three points to rise to second place in the Bundesliga.

Playing their 10th game in a month, Freiburg fielded an almost entirely different team from the side that tied 1-1 with Qarabag FK in a midweek Europa League match. Jeong came on as a second-half substitute in that match but started on Sunday.

After a scoreless first half, Jeong broke through in the 53rd minute with a left-footed shot off the post to give Freiburg a 1-0 lead. Goal No. 2 followed just 11 minutes later, when Michael Gregoritsch, who had assisted Jeong on his goal, knocked in one of his own.

Jeong played until the 82nd minute before being substituted off for Kevin Schade.

“We played very well once again today, and in the end, we deserved the win. I’m absolutely thrilled for the team,” said SC Freiburg head coach Christian Streich after the game.

Sunday’s goal marks Jeong’s first in the Bundesliga in only his second start this season. Jeong has also picked up one assist this season, against Bayern Leverkusen on Sept. 3 when he came off the bench in the ninth minute and played the majority of the rest of the game.

Jeong has also picked up a goal and an assist in the Europa League this season, both coming in a 4-0 win over FC Nantes on Oct. 13.

Freiburg are off to a strong start to the 2022-23 season, with eight wins, three draws and two losses so far this season putting them just one point behind Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich.

In the Europa League, Freiburg are guaranteed a spot in the Round of 16 after finishing at the top of Group G.
