Samsung Electronics is expanding its 5G network equipment supply to Japan’s NTT Docomo, the electronics maker said Wednesday.

The two companies signed a 5G equipment supply contract in March 2021. Samsung Electronics has been supplying radio units for radio access network (RAN) to NTT Docomo since then.

With the additional order, Samsung will now also sell 5G base station equipment for the 28-gigahertz frequency spectrum and a small-sized new model of a radio unit to the Japanese telecom company.

“NTT Docomo has been working with Samsung Electronics since the early stage of 5G adoption, and is continuing to realize our 5G visions such as Open RAN technology with Samsung,” said Masafumi Masuda, general manager of NTT Docomo’s wireless access network division.

“In the network equipment market, a long-standing trusting relationship and joint investment in next-generation technology are the keys,” said Satoshi Iwao, vice president and head of the network division at Samsung Electronics Japan.

“We will continue to work with NTT Docomo for the advancement of its 5G network by supplying quality 5G products based on Samsung Electronics’ leading technological capabilities.”
